Now one of the sons owns it and has renovated it, keeps it clean and they now embrace the name, The Gowler! The staff even wears shirts that have "Home of the Growler" on the back of the shirt. It is a grilled hotdog with yellow mustard, diced onions and their famous Texas sauce.
Here is what I ate yesterday, two Growlers and fries. I did not have Texas sauce on the fries. I used ketchup. My son put gravy on his fries.

Do you remember the skit on Saturday Night Live where Akroyd and Belushi worked at a greasy spoon diner. Akroyd's character worked the grill and didn't speak very good English. Every time Belushi's Character said "cheesebugga" Akroyd put another on the grill.
Well, local legend has it that when John Belushi was at the local college to do his comedy routine (I was present at that) he stopped at The Texas Lunch late at night and his idea for the skit came from the Texas Lunch restaurant!

John Belushi grew up in Wheaton Il a suburb of Chicago. The cheeseburger cheeseburger skit was a take off of Billy goats tavern on lower Wacker Dr below the Wrigley building at the Chicago river and Michigan Ave. All the reporters from the tribune and Sun Times would eat lunch there. The only thing they have is a cheeseburger. You walk in and order a hotdog and the Greek guy that owns it would yell out cheeseburger cheeseburger. No matter what you ordered you get a cheeseburger. Billy Goats is still around and it still only sells cheeseburgers. John was a comic at second city and that is where the skit started long before Saturday night live. He was also the home coming King his senior year at Wheaton high school and was probably one of the straightest guys you would meet. No drinking, drugs but was very funny. One of the guys I rented a house with in college was a very close friend of John. One more thing the original owners of Billy goats was the guy that put the curse on the Cubs.

I googled it to learn more about it. A bit of co-incidence... Belushi's fathers middle name, Anastos, is the last name of the owners of the Texas Lunch. By the way, they will celebrate their 100 anniversary next year!
