Broken glow plug

Hey there enthusiasts. I have a glow plug snapped off and it is STUCK! Any way to pull it or push it in without damaging my threads. I have basic mechanical tools but not really looking to buy an extractor kit. This is for a 1986 f250 6.9L. Thanks everyone!

Sorry to tell you this man but your going to have to get some kind of extractor to get that thing out of there.

Patience, time, a little bit of heat and penetrating lube is going to be the only way your going to get that thing out of there. Short of taking the cylinder head off and using pliers to twist it out...

Heres what I ultimately ended up doing. I was in a jam and had to get this done yesterday so if you're not strapped for time maybe you can find a slightly better way to do this. Anyways, I took a bolt extractor and Quicksteeled (jb weld) it to a socket that fit on it as I was hoping to grab it that way. I had also soaked it in pb blaster or something of that sort. I ended up knocking it loose but sliding it down so it was sitting halfway in the prechamber. However that way I was able to push it to the side a bit with a flathead giving me room to grab and remove it with a needle nose pliers.

I think the biggest reason that worked for me is I knew it was the whole electrode so it wouldn't fall loose into the prechamber. If only a small part of your electrode broke i wouldn't recommend this as I dunno how deep the chamber actually is.

Either way i hope this helps you or even gets you pointed in the right direction.

Thanks guys I'll try an extractor. If worse comes to worse I'll take the heads off. Only problem is getting it broke loose. I'm in Montana and there is a foot of snow on the ground now.

I feel ya brother. I have a new injection pump sitting in my spare room waiting to go in. I went up to the house to install it yesterday and it looked like this.

I'm not sure whether it would work or not, but would be worth a try. Make sure the glow plug is unscrewed(which I assume it is), put a bunch of towel wadding over top of it, and fire the truck up. Hopefully, the high cylinder pressures will push it out. If not... you might even try just driving it around the block, getting it warm so the head expands and pushes it out.

The only thing to worry about is if it /does/ come loose, where it will fly. That's what all the towel wadding is for.

is it broke flush with the head, or is there enough sticking out of the head to grab onto with a pair of vicegrips or a drill?
