Calling All Glow Plug Guru's
Ok, I have #7 all the way unthreaded but it is still stuck...it will not pull out of the hole...i gently tried some long needle nose pliers and still it would not come out...so I started engine and got it back up to temp and it would no blow out either!
The other seven; once loose came easily out once fully unscrewed.
Any ideas on this one?
Should I just screw it back in there and forget about it since I have 7 working real good?
Should I leave it completely loose and keep the tools and a new glowplug in the glove box for when it does blow out and do a road side/parking lot repair?
as said, try getting a small set of vicegrips on it and turn it as you gently pry it up. this will let you shave off the swollen par tof the tip to get it out.
as you already found out with removing the other plugs and getting this one loose, patience is the key to success. spin and pry for a bit, then soak it and try again tomorrow. it will come out, it will just take time to get it out.
I may just run on seven, I'm here in SC and the winters here and not too bad. If things went bad I could pull the head but I wouldnt look forward to it...94 idi Turbo.
I wish I knew what the tip of that autolite plug looked like..it could have ballooned so bad that it would be a broken tip no matter what if it was to come out.
I will gently try to rotate, rotate and rotate it, keeping the soak on it and gently pry up on it while at TDC...it may take a few more days or weeks.
Whew it was a real pain to get as far as I did on the two Autolites...#5 was bad but #7 was just plain scary ...Im so tempted to leave it alone but I want that dang thing out!
here in joisey you need all 8 in the winter. it don't get real cold like in alaska and cananada, but there are times it will go sub zero.
i lucked out back when i ran the shop with autocrap glow plug removal in that most of the trucks were non turbo back then so i could just chuck them up in a variable speed reversible drill and use the drill yo shave the swollen tip off.
I got that demon out and replaced it with the last motorcraft/beru...all eight are working fine and the glow plug controller is working normal.
I unscrewed it completely, soaked it, and got some long 90 degree needle nose pliers and approached it from underneath the turbo.
I first went gently and then over time used some moderate force to lift it until it was snug... trying to pull it out in the same plane of angle it entered the head then went in there with the 10mm wobble head ratchet and spun it until it was loose...after about 20-25 times of doing this long drawn out process the threads actually lifted about 1/4 inch above the head...so I was getting somewhere....a few more tries of that long process it lifted about 5/16 of an inch...and then a few more tries of pulling it with the needle nose pliers and rotating with the ratchet it until it was free, it moved up to about 3/8 of an inch above the head...I could now see just below the threaded body and see just a tiny portion of the glow plug element itself... now was the time to really be careful to make sure i gently pulled up on the same plane and rotated it...then a few more tries of the ratchet and needle nose pliers and it popped right out.
Thank you everyone for you help! I really do appreciate it!!!!!!!
Here is the offending glow plug....an Autolite plug caught red-handed!
