oil level

I just changed my oil for the first time. 3 quarts is what everyone says. So i put in 13, the level on the dipstick looks high. It was dark so I couldn't see all that well, but it looked over full

The guague on the dash says It's fine, should I be concerned?

A Little is probably ok. If it’s a quart over then I would drain some. My guess is you are about 1/3 of a quart over. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Next time you change your oil only put 12 quarts in and then see where it’s at. I bet to bring it to the fill mark you will only be able to get another 2/3 of a quart in it.

After refill, did you start the engine and let it run a minute or so? Turn it off and recheck after it sets a second.

I was stupid, I just put in the 13, started it, let it run, checked for leaks then measured with the dip stick. It looks like it was right at the top. It's so hard to see if it is actually over or not. On the stick, if your in the tolerance the stick has grooves that hold the oils so you can see the level. if you are over, there are no grooves so it's hard to tell if you are over or if you just have some residue on there.

I normally put in less then add, not sure why I didn't do that this time, just in a hurry I guess. My interior dash gauge says it's fine, so I'm probably OK

Redrockerstl55 gives good advice...put 12 quarts in, then start the truck and run it for a minute, then shut it off and wait at least 5 minutes. Now pull the dipstick and see where the level is at. Add more if necessary. It's better to be down a quart than a quart overfilled.

Forget about the dash gauge...all that does is show if you have oil pressure or not. It is literally a Yes/No and there is no range of oil pressure reading high or low. The gauge is fake news.
