why does my engine require 7 quarts of oil

i know the 4.2 i supposed to take 6 quarts of oil. about a year and a half back, i was having my oil changed, and the technician told me that the six quarts put in was showing low on the stick, i checked it out, and it was. he suggested putting another quart in so we did and it read right. on oil changes that i have done myself....same result.do some 4.2's just take more? is there a one quart +/- variable? it seems like it would be a precision thing.

thanks, kellen

This subject has come up before.
Seems 6 qts is factory "full" but doesn't reach the top of the cross-hatch area on the dipstick. I have, on occasion, run an extra 1/2 qt as this puts it about 2/3 the way up the cross-hatch area on the dip stick.
I'd shy away from 7 qts. Probably won't hurt anything but no sense risking overfilling for no real benefit.

edit: Strick, nice avatar.

The manual says "6" quarts; not 6-1/3 or 6-1/2 or even 7! You're only asking for trouble exceeding the factory required fill.

ok.. obviously the manual says six, but at the same time the dip stick is there as a measure,as something to warn you if something is wrong.... the truck was most deffinetly on flat ground and i looked at the stick, he was right. also the engine was hot...the oil was fully expanded. so it couldnt get any higher on the stick. i don't know, but it seems like that isnt right. maybe seven is too much but six for sure wasnt cutting it... just wondering what you guys thought. Brian, thanks for the info, sounds like you have dealt with the same thing. anyone else?????

Kellendv,as a former engine builder and bracket racer,I was giving you good advice.If you want to hear it from real Ford techs then go to this website;
www.flateratetech.com
This site is run by Ford techs and i'm sure they will tell you the same thing too. They might even tell you why your dipstick is not reading correctly too.

I put sex quarts in my truck and it is enough. I always check my pressure gauge and it's right in the middle, maybe middle high. Six is just fine.

BTW: Why does Ford recommend 5W-20 instead of 10W-30 or even 5W-30? Just wondering.

Oops! I meant six quarts in my truck, not sex. I wonder what's on my mind?

Inda, i was told that switching to 10w at 60 or 70 thousand would help slow the breakdown of the engine and give it a longer life.....couldnt tell you for sure why they say that.

Kellen,
Thanks for the tip. I just rolled over 70k on my 01.

Inda,
Where exactly do you get quarts of sex?
