I've never tried it that way but there is a strong pair of small springs that keep the detent engaged in it's gate. These springs fit in a notch on the end of the gearshift and I think that this would prevent the shift lever from sliding out.

There's no reason to disassemble the column to remove the shift lever. The detent (7A216) attaches to the upper flange (3511). I don't see any springs associated with it.
The OP failed to list the year of the truck, but his "About Me" profile says 1978 F350.
