Column shift column versus floor shift column

1989 F250 M5OD 302 4X4

My tilt column has seen better days...it was previously driven by someone shorter and larger than me. Years of pulling on the steering wheel to pull themselves up into the truck took its toll on the bearings and pivots, to the point that it has too much movement. I was given a column with no shake in it, but it's for an automatic...and mine is a manual trans.

Other than looking odd with the automatic shift collar on it, is there any reason why it won't fit in my truck?

I can hide the collar with some grinding and a leather wrap...just wanting to make sure this will fit. Came from the same year truck...just an F350

Yes it will work. You don't have to grind the shifter arm off - it is held in to the column with a roll pin. You might even be able to replace the collar the shifter arm goes into with the one from your manual column, but I have never done that so I cannot say for sure.

I removed the shifter are...but will grind the hole down so I can cover it with something, likely a piece of black leather I have. I want to try to hide the collar so the average person doesnt know it's not the right column. I hit local cruise ins with it, and dont want folks to look and lsugh... ya know. Lol

thanks for the answer

Well, I've cleaned up the new column, removed the shifter arm, and ground down the bump that held the shifter. I've got one coat of black pain on it, and the hole is much less noticable. I'll wind up covering it with a leather wrap eventually.

I'll post pics after I get the old one removed and new one installed.

I lost the shroud on the original column during a move, and have had a heck of a time locating a replacement, due to it being a manual trans. Almost all I've found were automatics with tilt, versus manual with tilt. Those that I did find had already been attacked by scavengers, so the part I was looking for was gone.
