They had reported over 2 million miles of testing on the 6.0, if I remember reading correctly on pickuptrucks.com . I do not know what they were testing if it turned out with these results.
Some other potential thoughts:
Theory #1: Since the Ford/IH deal soured over the mini-Power Stroke for the F-150 (apparently worked out now for the LCF), there could had been some tinkering by disgruntled IH employees on the 6.0L guts.
Theory #2: Monday and Friday trucks. Nobody feels like working on Monday, and everybody is ready to get home on Friday, therefore meaning lower quality for engines built on those days.
I think that if the 6.0 didn't have the potential to top the competitors, then Ford wouldn't have used it. They need an engine to replace the 7.3, something that is continually upgradeable and something to keep them on top.
I think we're already in the neighborhood of diminishing returns with these engines.
Because of emissions AND POWER, fuel mileage is starting to go in to the crapper. The 6.0 by all accounts is averaging 11-13 around town, and maybe as much as 17-18 hwy. The Cummins 600 is'int doing much better. This is still considerably better than compareable gassers will do in these trucks under identical circumstances I guess, but it's not on par with older diesel mpg. That extra power has to come from extra fuel - at least to a degree, there's no way around it. 500 ftlbs will pull just as well as 600 will for all intents and purposes, and it will use alot less fuel doing it.
Interesting point. The mileage on my 6.0 has always been worse than my dmax was. The Excursion is a bit heavier so I've been mostly blaming that but I don't read many posts of many 6.0's that have the kind of mileage the dmax's seemed to be averaging. I wonder if the new generation dmax mileage will suffer accordingly? Likely, I'd guess. As the MPG gap closes, diesel would become less and less attractive to me. Shoot, my 454 in my 99 3/4 ton 'burb did a great job of pulling the loads I tow. I was just looking for better mileage by going diesel.
Reading these posts my thoughts are each poster makes some great points that I cant argue with. My conclusion is yes we are ford loyal on this site. Blinded by it maybe Is that good no it isnt. Out of all the diesel motors ford has had the 6.0 has had the most problems nobody can question that. Everybody makes valid points in there threads I cant argue with anybody here. However I believe Ford makes the best overall truck on the market today even with the 6.0 problems. You wouldnt think ford would be selling any new 6.0s but thats not the case there are selling lots of them as they usually do. Am I blinded by loyalty. Well maybe I am but ford trucks have been good to me. Whatever you drive and are happy with thats what counts irregardless of whatever I say or anybody else. I see so many older ford trucks haulin loads workin hard and these are getting some age15-16-17 years old with many miles am I blinded I hope not.
Don't worry too much about being blinded. Most Cummins types are blinded to their side, most Ford guys are blinded to their own problems. Both the 6.0 and the new 600 Cummins have had problems, although the 6.0 has to be the newly crowned king in that area. Fact is that the vast majority of either of them have served their owner's problem free. How sad is it that the Isuzu motor with the aluminum heads has the least complaints? Sure, they don't sell as many Duramaxes as they do Powerstrokes, but the complaints just are not there. I also do not believe that people have much of a leg to stand on when they bomb their truck (even with a chip) and then try to blame the manufacturer, but that is another post for another time.
I am kid of glad that GM has finally got a diesel motor to compete with ford and dodge. They deserve it. There past diesel motors were probably the most problematic diesel ever made. It willbe interesting to see how the new updated duramax and dodge cummins will be as far as problems are concerned. These new EPA regulations are raising havoc with all three.
