powerstoke problems
I read on here about all the problems the new powerstroke is having.I have a 2002 powerstroke and think its a great truck.Did Chevy have this many problems with the duramax when it came out?Everbody thought they were going to have problems with the head does anbody no if they are?

I know that the the lestest model PSDs don't have many problems, but I've heard all kinds of problems about the '03 Strokers, I've also hear the '04's should be fixed

I would wait on the new PSD, everybody i know that has one has had nothing but problems. Injectors causing engine failure, loss of power in cold weather, rough idle, computer problems......Thats just some of what i have seen.....

I have the 7.3 and don't have problems, but I have heard of problems with the 6.0, but not as many as when the DuraMax came out (according to a GM mechanic buddy of mine)... He said the rollout of those were the biggest nightmare to ever hit his service department. Since then, he has used my PSD to pull his boat a few times and now likes the PSD much more than the DuraMax... Just my .02...

I just bought a 2001 PSD and did all the research for about a month. I decided on PSD nothing older than 1999(just liked the body style). For pulling 5th wheel, there doesn't seem to be anything with as much good fortune. My buddy has a duramax and it does have some issues. Anything can have problems, it really comes down to luck and maintenance. As for the 2003's & 2004's and the consesus is wait. Ford is suppose to have some fix that starts rolling out in late October. Question: How does Ford roll out a fix, with out addmitting there was a problem in the first place?

My buddy bought a Duramax the same time I bought a Powerstroke.We draged race these trucks and that chevy blew me away.was not even close.I though the Ford had more torque than theChevy.But did not show their.We were in the Blackhills of south Dakota with are campers hes got a lot Bigger camper than i do.I had a hell of time keeping up with him.The7.3 runs good but dont try to take on the Duramax.He has had no problems with his.

I think the only problem PSD's are the new 6.0's, not the old 7.3. I looked into this a LOT before just picking up a new Excursion with a 6.0 PSD. The new 6.0's have a very high rate of failure if the forums here and other places are any kind of indicator.
My 01 dmax/allison was totally trouble free and a fun, fun motor. I know 5 other guys that have 01 and 02 dmax's and they've all been totally reliable. I was worried about that when I bought my dmax because 01 was the first year for that motor. I've followed some of the big GM forums for the last 2 years and have never seen anything even close to the levels of failures that the 6.0 has had so far.
Obviously, I'm hoping Ford has the problems ironed out by now. My 6.0 has a late May build date and I have my fingers crossed (and an extended warranty) big time.

I was at a buddies place(having beverages) and there was a guy with a new Duramax and a guy there with a PSD 7.3. After consuming a few of these beverages, They desided to go bumper to bumper on tar. The Powerstroke pulled the chevy around like it wasnt anything at all. I believe the Fords are alot heavier because the Ford didnt even break a tire loose and the chevy had all four spinning. I had a smile ear to ear!

I know of a lot of transmission problems with the new 2003 6.0 L. I have a cousin who works in a Ford dealership and say that the new torqueshift tranny is a nightmare. Ford knows there is a problem but it costs almost as much as the trany does to fix it so there will be no recall. (just going to let the poor sucker who but there new truck break down somewhere). The 2004 is suposed to be fixed but we will haved to wait and see what happens. He said they have not seen any reacuring engine probs yet. As for the duramax I work at a Structual Steel company and haul welders around and steel with a fith wheel tandum dually that weighs 7,000 empty, and my boss has a 2003 duramax that has 8,000 miles on it and it has been in the shop three times. Computer failure, tranny overheat( that the dealer says nothing is wrong),and the tailgate fell off. It leaves my 2001 powerstroke behind off the line empty, but pulling that thing is a dogg. I can be loaded down with my overloads flat and he will put a 3,000lbs. welder in the back of his bed and I still blow smoke on him. So I take any duramax on chiped or not.

We have acouple of the o3 6.0 litres in service trucks with the torqueshift one 350, 2-450. Everything was in the shop lots. Computer , injectors, electrical. the newest one has a march build date. The fuel mileage isn't to good either but the 450 cross the scales at 12000lbs all the time. but when they are running and hooking up the torque and power is unbelievable made the 450 into a real sport truck other than the low top speed limit

I heard that that Ford had a computer problem when the new PS came out but they took action right away and had a chip and recall out to all the new ones and they all got fixed right away. They even sent chips to the dealerships to be put in the ones on the showroom floor.
I also heard that the Dura had injector problems after about 10000 miles and chevy was dening that there was any problem. well what does chevy not have problems with they have never been able to make a good diesel.
Seems to me that Ford is a lot better in fixing there problems and with customer service. wouldnt buy any pickup but a Ford.

Yeah, finding diesel fuel in your crankcase, and listening in horror as your turbo self-destructs are not "software" issues. The new Powerstroke really IS junk...I hate to admit. I know GM had some issues with the Durajunk when it first came out , and the Allison tranny had some issues too...but they got them squared away pretty quickly. I don't think I have ever heard as many horror stories about a truck as I have the new 6.0L diesel in the Fords. Heck, just last weekend I was at my dealer picking up parts and a guy came in for the 3rd time, mad as heck, that his new 6.0L had almost stranded him again.

I had 32k on the dmax I mentioned above. No injector problem or any other kind of problems. Outside of a few adjustment issues and cruise control flash within the first month of owning it, it never went in the shop for anything. I followed the GM diesel forums before and after buying that truck and I've never seen anything even remotely close to what I see on the 6.0 forum here and on other Ford forums for problems.
I'm sure hoping Ford has the 6.0 figured out. I feel like I took a huge gamble trading my dmax for a 6.0 but at least I did it with my eyes open.
