2000 v10. Switch does nothing no lights or anything come on when you flip the switch. But 4x4 light will occasionally come on when you hit a bump just right or stand on the running board with the vehicle at the right angle. It all worked when we bought it last February but now it doesn't. Guessing it is vacuum or electrical. But was wondering if anybody else has experienced anything like this any help would be greatly appreciated.
I should add just because light is on doesn't mean 4x4 is engaged.
chances are the plug on the transfercase has corroded or broken off wires maybe entire plug came out or loose the vaccum engages the front hubs only. if you are refering to being sure the front hubs are working properly with the switch make sure they are unlocked and have someone engage the 4x4 switch and you or the person that knows what to listen for stand near and walk by the truck as you or someone drives the truck back roughly 1 whole tire rotation and there will be a faint clunk/click sound of the hubs engaging to the inner shafts same can be done for finding out about the transfercase engaging 4x4 if watching the front drive shaft will begin to rotate with the rear one
take a hammer/mallet and "lightly" tap the solenoid shift motor on the back of the transfer case
they're a bad design since 1992 that allows water inside. stuff corrodes and the solenoid sticks. tapping with a hammer knocks the corrosion loose
99% of the time it works and is always the 1st thing I check. After that, check the 4x4hi and 4x4lo relays and fuses. Ford sequenced a lot of functions down separate paths from the old days.
Similar issue sometime ago. Bad connection on the harness at the transfer case. Start troubleshooting where the elements affect the 4x4 electrical integrity ... by the transfer case.
