Crazy question....anyone ever done a body removal WITHOUT a lift? I'm thinking that one could remove the running boards (as they do with a lift), get everything loose/disconnected, jack it up enough to slide either some sort of channel or 2x6 from side to side (at the corners like when using a lift), and use straps to go from those corners up to a gantry setup (which I have access to). Anyone have experience with that?
Here's the reason I ask: Looks like the Cummins swap is gonna have to wait a bit longer than expected and I'll have to give up my beater car to one of the kids who is about to start driving. So, the swap will happen during the winter and not this fall like I wanted. Given that, I want to make it as easy and efficient as possible to get everything done that I want to do. Seems to me that a body removal might get me there. Build thread here for what I'm currently planning.
Never seen it here on FTE, but a gantry could work if rated for the needed weight. Not sure how high you want to lift; I'd be temped to use 2 hoists. Whatever you decide, be diligent about weight and safe lifting loads.
I couldn't find it either here. I was able to find someone who did it with a chain fall on the front and a forklift on the back. I'd rather do it from the sides at the points you'd normally use a lift on. I'll keep thinking on it. I do have access to an overhead beam with several flavors or chain falls all the way up to one that came out of Fernald...certainly can hold the weight. Also have an outdoor type gantry and several tractors with front loaders that could be used. That may actually be my best bet to keep straps off the sides of the X and keep from squeezing it. I'm more worried about warping the body than the weight. We've lifted much heavier objects than the X safely. I figure the body probably weighs somewhere on the order of 2 ton by itself. Thanks for the input, we'll see what happens!
You could probably make spreader bars that would keep the straps more vertical along the sides as you lift it up with tractors. Get a couple of 4x4 posts maybe 9' long to put between straps above the roof. Notch the ends slightly for the straps to fit in.
There's a thread where a guy mated a 2012 6.7 PSD F350 with his Ex. He pulled the body in his garage. Slid the frame out from under it. Spliced the rear part of the Ex frame with the front of the F350 frame. I'm on mobile and can't find the thread right now. I'm sure others will know which I'm talking about.
