Is the 4x4 dash light on? The dash light runs off of what the transfer case motor is doing only. The dash light does not indicate what position the front hubs are in.
If the light does not come on: check switch/fuses, wires, & transfer case motor.
If the light does come on: you have a hub problem. Turn the hubs to lock/manual to get you out of trouble. Check switch/fuses, wires, & vacuum lines.
At least once a month it is a good idea to engage/disengage the ESOF 4x4 system. Per the Ford mechanics I know, the biggest reason why ESOF fails is due to under use. Only using it in the winter time is not enough.
the lites are not comming on the transfer case is not shifting .i have checked the fuze .i pulled the switch on the dash to see if a plug fell off when i changed my dimmer switch ,another problem the dealer messed up they said it was the bulbs go figure all going at once . after reading some past posts im thinking its a solinoid falure was just wondering troubble shooting tests i dont like to replace good parts with new costly ones thanks
i'll bet its your shift motor.turn the switch and see if your getting voltage at the shift motor. i've just gone and picked up the motor and replaced it on 3 different trucks, and that was the problem.
The shift motor on the transfer case can be taken off and bench tested. Just take some jumper wires off a 12 volt source, and touch to the two terminals on the motor. reverse the wires to run the motor the other way. If the motor runs in both directions, then check for binding on the transfer case shaft. Take a wrench and manually shift the transfer case in and out of gear. Mine was binding once. After engaging and disengaging a couple times it has worked like a champ. Also check for vacuum at the pump and canister. I found I have a vacuum leak behind my a/c controls. If I turn it to off, it hisses, if set to a vent setting it's ok. This condition kept the hubs on my truck from locking, as well as the vac. pump continually running. The dash light gets its signal off the transfer case motor sensor. Hope this helps.
Before you worry about yanking the shift motor out of there, first check to see if the connector to it is loose. That has been know to happen quite often.
It may have just not been plugged all the way in from the factory and not wiggled itself loose.
Next, I would have someone else in the truck and have them turn it to 4wd. If you hear the shift motor turning, you more than likely may have stripped the plastic gear the engages the trasfer case.
