My key is not recognized
#2
Welcome to FTE.
When you removed the battery, did you have the ignition switch turned on, or did you turn the ignition switch on while the battery was out?
If you have more than one key, will the system recognize the other key/s?
If it'll recognize the other keys, use them & the procedure in your owner manual to try & reprogram the acting out key.
If no joy, or you don't have more than one key, use or come by the inexpensive ELM scan tool, running FORScan diagnostic software on the viewing device of your choice as discussed here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html & have FORScan query the PATS anti theft system for trouble code clues & post up All trouble code Numbers it finds.
The latest version of FORScan can now work with PATS & maybe can enable you to reprogram keys, if you don't have more than one key.
If you don't want to do that, then call a trusted locksmith that has the equipment to cut & program new keys. Have him do a spare/so you have 3 programmed keys, in case you loose one in the future, you can buy another key & program it using the owner manual procedure.
If you don't have the owner manual, one can be down loaded at no cost here. Owner Manuals | fleet.ford.com
Also it would be helpful to add the year, engine, tranny cab model, ect, vehicle info to your signature, as different years had different PATS systems & it can help members diagnose & give diagnostic, or repair advice on our vehicle woes, if they can read how the vehicle is equipped.
A bunch of thoughts to get you started, let us know how it goes.
