programming PATS key quick question

hey guys, I have a 97 expy I heard a few different answers and wanted to make sure this was correct for the 97's. If anyone know's I would greatly appreciate the info. I bought a pats key for my truck off ebay for 15 bucks instead of the 90 bucks the dealership wanted.

If you want to add a key....
1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.

2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.

3. Remove the existing key and, within 15 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to ON (RUN).

4. The security light will light up for two seconds to indicate success in programming the key into the vehicle.

5. Don't attempt to start the vehicle with any key for at least 1 minute.

Those instructions match what the manual for the 97 says. It's different for my 04 though, I have to have two working keys in order to program a third.

Here's the actual text from the 97 manual, starting on p. 67:

Programming spare keys
Use one of the two electronically coded keys supplied with your vehicle to program additional keys:
  • Insert a coded key into the ignition and turn to the On position.
  • Wait until the THEFT light in the instrument cluster illuminates and then turns off.
  • Within 15 seconds, insert a new key into the ignition and turn the ignition to On or Start. The vehicle does not have to be started to program the key.
If the key has been coded properly, the theft indicator will illuminate for two seconds. The newly coded key can then be used to start the vehicle. This process may be repeated to code up to 16 keys.

If the key has not been coded properly, the theft indicator will flash and the vehicle cannot be started. There are several possible explanations:
  • The new key was not inserted within 15 seconds.
  • All 16 key codes have already been stored.
  • The key does not have an electronic code.

My new key works.. but I din't see the theft light flash for 2 seconds like the directions said I would.. "If the key has been coded properly, the theft indicator will illuminate for two seconds." oh well.. My dumb luck the code thing has been disabled and I could have used any key.
