I've been having trouble with my E40D trans (1996 bronco 5.0 manual 4x4 auto hubs) It's been shifting somewhat poorly (sometimes/often jerking into gear, often waiting too long to shift, etc). It hasn't been slamming gears as badly as my last Bronco (RIP trans), but it's still bad. I replaced the VSS, hoping that would cure it, but so far nothing has changed (except now I have a slight flutter in the speedo above 75 mph). The trans fluid appears to be at the proper level as well.
Some other unrelated (but may be related) issues: I believe the brake booster sprung a (bigger) leak last week, ever since the engine will often die if I come to a stop too fast. Waiting on the replacement booster. Also have an exhaust leak from (I believe) the Pass. manifold. Have the manifold, waiting for time to put it in (or someone to put it in).
Does anyone have any idea what's causing it? The truck only has 161k miles. I haven't particularly abused it. I'd hate for it to be a computer issue.
Thanks in advance.
P.S., should I post this on the same era F series forum, for the purpose of greater viewing numbers (and consequently more input)? Or would that be improper?
Any codes? (I think you get tranny codes) You could try cleaning the Vehicle Speed Sensor, I believe they are called. That's the electronic pickup which I assume is in the rear end.
Could be the solenoid pack.
I had a 1994 F250 with the 460. That E4OD was a lemon! The E4OD in my Bronco has been great. Just turned over 180,000 miles.
I haven't checked for codes yet, I believe it's an OBD II and I only have an OBD I reader.
When I replaced the VSS, I also drained and replaced the differential fluid, and soon after doing so the jerkiness returned. I'll see if I can clean it tomorrow, and if that doesn't fix it I'll try to take it to a trans shop and see if they can diagnose it.
Check the electrical connector on the side of the tranny. If the connector gets water inside, you will have weird transmission problems and a shop will never find it. They will gladly sell you a new transmission but chances are there's nothing wrong with yours mechanically.
I'm going to get the fluid changed this week, since I don't know when it was last changed (if ever) and see if that changes anything. Then I will go on the electrical Snipe hunt and hope I find the problem, really hope it's a fluid issue.
@willceecee
I thought you were yanking my chain until I looked it up. I will see about that sometime this week.
Skip the anti-shudder. It's a band-aid over a problem that needs to be fixed. I would definitely change the fluid with either Valvoline Maxlife or Mobil 1 full synthetic. The maxlife is about $20 a gallon but the Mobil 1 is much more expensive.
I just put maxlife atf in my JW tranny... if he says it's the right stuff then it's good as gold.
Update: replaced the brake booster, but it will still die if I come to a stop too fast, I believe the trans isn't shifting fast enough and stalling the engine. I'm taking it to AAMCO tomorrow, hopefully they can diagnose the issue, and I won't need a new tranny.
there is a good chance the psom or the electronic control plug is contributing to this. you probably have other probs too with the engine controls. get someone to check codes if you cant buy or use a reader.
getting the fluid changed would be a good thing if you don't know if its ever been done and i agree on Mobile 1.
I wouldn't take my lawn mower to ammco, but it's your money. They are known to be quite incompetent. If they tell you that you need a rebuild, get a second opinion.
Figured out the problem: low fluid. Odd since I checked it earlier and while it was a bit low, it was still in the "good" area. The issue was/is the transfer case, the chain is loose and it was leaking. So, either need a new transfer case or rebuild the old one.
With some new fluid it shifts great, wish I'd have checked that more closely. Well, you live and you learn.
@andym I didn't know that aamco had such a bad rep. The people I've talked to swear by them and their work (though maybe they didn't really know what they were talking about, happens far to often in this field). I'll remember that for next time.
