This is just a shot in the dark, maybe someone can help with this:
1990 Bronco 351W, E4OD trans. The trans had 170k and started to slip, lost 3rd gear and would go into 4th gear at about 30 mph. This caused the thing to shudder and jolt the truck until it gained enough speed for 4th gear to actually work right. Had trans rebuilt with all upgrades - about $3000. Get it out of shop and it does the exact same thing!! Repair shop has no idea what it is. It is under warranty, but they cannot find what the problem is. Has anyone ever heard of this. The shop is AAMCO, so they know what they are doing. But maybe it has nothing to do with trans. No codes either.
why does aamco know what they are doing? a name doesnt make the workmanship , the mechanic doing the work does.
if its not giving any codes then its the tranny. make them pull it out and give you completly new one.
pull your rear diff cover and inspect the tone ring for wear or missing teeth. clean/replace the vss sensor on the rear axle and possibly the mlp solenoid on the tranny. are you not getting any codes at all? because even if its all good you should at least get a code that states that.
The shop has been looking into it, but they have not been able to find out what the problem is. No codes are showing up. That is what has me puzzled also. It should give some code that tells what the problem is. Could the ECU be bad? I trust the shop, they are a good trans shop and have been in business for 41 years. Dad and son operation.
The shake and clunking noise I thought was the tranny turned out to be the rear end. Found it out the hard way going down the road at 65 when rear end went clunk and locked up. Real fun ride after that - still cant figure out how I didn't wreck. Did about 3 spins before ending up on the side of the road. Threw a 2 inch chunk of metal out of the rear diff in the process.
$500 for a '94 rear end and changed all vaccum lines and she runs like a champ. Still doesn't shift like I want, by-passes 3rd gear sometimes while other time it will hold 3rd for a while. I'm looking at the ECU now to see if something is wrong there. I did the 5.0 to 5.8 conversion about 2 years ago, so maybe I missed something.
Yeah, I have the 5.8 ECU but after checking fordfuelinjection.com, the number does not match one with the E4OD. So I may have an ECU with the wrong transmission programmed. Everything else works fine, just doesn't shift right. I'll check with some places to see if I can get another ECU.
I had similar problems with my truck,it ended up being a corroded connector under the master cylinder. This was in the wires that go to the transmission. Cleaned it up and the tranny has been fine for 4 years now. Ford wanted to throw a new trans in it.
The ECM (ECA, PCM whatever you wanna call it this week) for a truck with an E4OD has 12 additional connections that are needed to drive the E4OD properly. Basically pins 2, 12, 19, 30, 31, 32, 38, 41, 42, 52, 53 and 55 are all utilized to drive electronics in the E4OD. So any other ECM is gonna struggle with it.
