For trucks that have the push button start: The tailgate does NOT have a lock solenoid, so all the suggestions above about interrupting the lock solenoid with a switch or simply unplugging it are false/FAKE NEWS.
The tailgate is OPENED by the electronic solenoid (not locked).
The solenoid is REQUIRED to open the tailgate.
When the doors are locked, the electronic push button on the tailgate is simply turned off, thus not sending power to the actuator to OPEN the tailgate.
To the OP- the best way to fix your issue is to turn off the auto door lock function so the doors (and tailgate) will only be locked when you command them to be locked.
If your truck has a manual old style lever action tailgate latch- then the suggestions above DO apply.
Is there a key lock that will disconnect the tailgate when my truck is locked? The problem is that when you lock the truck with the electronic lock, the tailgate is also locked. If someone breaks into the truck all they have to do is press the unlock button and every door is unlocked including the tailgate. It would be nice to have a key lock somewhen near the tailgate to disconnect it from the locking system when the truck is locked. That way if someone breaks in they won't be able to open the tailgate.
