I have an 1980 F-150 with a 460 swap. The NP 208 is starting to make noises that I don't like. Due to the torque of the 460 I was wondering if I could swap a 3/4 t-case in place of the NP 208? I realize that I would have to deal with yoke u-joint issues but I know a real good drive line shop, so I don't think that will be too bad. This t-case would be going behind a C-6. Any suggestions for year and model, and any personal experiences.
I have the transfer cases listed here (Transfer Cases - ???Gary's Garagemahal), and as you can see there really wasn't such a thing as a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton case. In our years they used the NP208 and the BW1345 for the same applications, with the BW1356 coming in as of 1987, but the 1345 was still used.
So, when I was looking for a stronger replacement than the 208 for Dad's truck I did a LOT of asking around, especially at the 4-wheeler shops around here. And the consistent answer I got was that there isn't enough difference to worry about. However, the 1356 has a true oil pump, although with a minor but known problem, and therefore is slightly better.
Fortunately, all of the attached transfer cases mount exactly the same way, so you can easily bolt a 1345 or 1356 where a 208 was. However, the main differences are twofold: the shift linkage and the output couplings. On the linkage, I think the 1345 is the same as the 208, although I'm not sure. But I do know the 1356 is different, so some adaptation will be necessary.
As for the outputs, turns out there were several output shafts for the transfer cases, and on the 1356 there was a 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton, and Bronco. If I remember correctly, in front the 1/2 ton had the small u-joint, the 3/4 ton a bigger u-joint, and the 1 ton a CV joint. And I don't remember how the rear differed.
So, by swapping you aren't going to get a lot stronger t-case. And depending on which one you go with you could then need a driveshaft made for the front and rear and have to adapt the shift linkage. Oh, and change out the electrical plug for the 4wd indicator.
