I just recently picked up a 1976 F-100 4x4 it has a 360cui 4speed and a in/out
transfercase. I also have a 1979 Bronco that I had bought for parts that has a automatic trans with a 205 transfercase. can I swap the 205 into the truck with
the 4spd or is there a big can of worms about to be opened??
Maybe not, from what I gather on the Advance Adaptors page Ford used the same transfer case bolt pattern and 10 spline input shaft for a long time. However, just because it bolts up doesn't mean making the linkage work will be easy. Pulling the transfer case is relatively easy so it might be OK to just try and see. An NP205 weighs about 200 lbs ( I think )
Assuming the input shaft is either the same, or "swappable" (I don't know Jack about Ford slushboxes), shouldn't be a major problem. As mentioned above - it's not a light transfer case (all of 200 pounds, maybe a wee bit more). Linkage is a single stick - or VERY easy to twin stick. I'm putting this same transfer case in my Jeep, along with a Klune-V and a T-176 (later to be replaced with a Ford NP-435). With the exception of the Dana 300 - probably the most popular transfer case out there - lots of info available on the web.
I am curious of this also I think with the right adapter from the 435 it should bolt in I have a 205 out of a 79 Bronco auto also I also want to twin stick mine while I am in there.
Can you tell me what you mean by "in/out" transfer case? I'm not sure if you're talking a full time case or what. If it IS a full time, like a 203 then you should be able to swap no problem. I have 205's from manuals and autos and the spline count is the same as long as you have a Ford t-case (driver's side drop).
Ivan, your site was one of several I bookmarked and printed when I did my modification - thanks!
Now I just need to build my sticks and linkage - a bit more complicated with the Klune in there. Probably hang the pivot assembly off the back of the transmission.
An in/out tc is just a singlespeed tc--only 4wd-2wd. It has a high (1 to 1) ratio and no low (2 to 1) ratio. It is the Dana 21 tc used only for the F100s (67-to about 76), not F250s which used the Dana 24 and NP205s. That's an easy question.
I am from Junction City just out side of Eugene I have done more research I talked to my ford guy at the local wrecking yard green high boy is right even though that is a np435 it is diffrent then a 435 coupled to a 205 so I need a tranny and the adapter to make it work also some driveline mods are going to have to be done I can get the tranny, adapter and crossmember for $250 so while I am at Im swapping in a dana 60 rear with locker that I also have so I wont have to make two drive line mods this way I can put 1 ton 1310 series yokes in the rear much stronger I hope this helps
let me know how it goes im thinking about getting a 74 F-250 for a parts truck it has hall the stuff I need for mine too. I used to go up at Shot gun and the bowl at McGowen, My sister owns Quackers in Eugene GO DUCKS!!
