Hey John,
We've got a 351W with an AOD & an Edelbrock carb with a Lokar set up.
Hmmmm... I can tell you we didn't have much luck until we switched to a
Lokar set up. These are tricky to set up correctly & if you don't have the right pressure your
trans will not last long (a couple of miles). I had guys at a trans shop set mine... it even took them a bit to get it right.
I'd be cautious... AOD's aren't very good at trial & error if the pressure isn't right. I'd trailer it in to a shop & have them set it up. I know that's wimpy
but it's expensive to rebuild them (I know).
Matthew do you have a pic of a modified Ford tv cable/rod
On my donor it was a cable
I've never really modded as I have always used factory parts to do the swap short of Holleys then the rod was just mounted on the AT Kick down lever at the same distance from the shaft center-line as the 2150 was .
I'm not fan of cables even the stock ones go out of adjustment eventually, once a rod is adjusted it is set forever. The rod will fit 99% of OHV Swaps.
Swapping from a cable to rod is super easy you just change the bracket on the trans and add the rod.
If you have a cable and are now using a Carb you need an adapter/ bracket on the carb throttle shaft that has the same distance from the throttle shaft center-line to the TV cable mounting stud on the EFI throttle body from that application..
Only had to do this once where the rod would not clear a modded firewall. As long as this distance is maintained you are good to go as you are keeping the same ratio.. Think of them as a matched set. I never took pics of the set up unfortunately as this was done almost 20 years ago.
I have always used Factory bits to do the swaps most all have been on carb'd vehicles if I was going from a Cable AOD I always just got the bits for a rod set up from the wreckers and changed it to a rod.
The TV rods between the 5.0 and 5.8L are different to accommodate the 1.5" taller deck on the 351W. The lever on the trans is the same though. As mentioned on the other thread a 302 Rod will work on the 351 with some tweaking provided that there is enough clearance on the back of the intake.
Applications for the rod are any Carb'd 1980-1991 Crown Vic 302 & 351W (the 351 was used with a carb till 91 in police units). 1980-91 Grand marquis Canada Only) Lincoln town car 1980-85.
The rod and brackets from a VV carb are the same as on the 2150's
Any Fox body Thunderbird Courgar Mustang Capri Fairmont etc with carb'd 5.0L/302
Not sure about the Port Injection models they are scares up here and never messed with one.
Mine is also a cable I simply pulled the end of the throttle shaft off of my donor fuel injected and put it on my edelbrock carb centered on the shaft as it was . I am hoping this will work properly . That sure seems like a huge drop in rpm 56panel , should make quite a difference in fuel .What size tires are you running
How much pressure at idle can you have? I have it set up where it has 3 PSI at idle and 34 PSI when you install the 5/16 gauge tool. The pressure increases with throttle but it is very sluggish from a take off...
I just took it out for another spin, what seems to be happening is when you come off the highway and come to a stop it's not shifting into 1rst gear and the lugging or slipping effect is because I'm starting off in second, if I manually shift it into first gear there is no problem..now I have no idea what the problem is...

Try going to 5 PSI idle and the gauge tool should be 0.275 cable or 0.390 -0.404 for the block. It would help to know what TV bracket is on your trans.
And the Carb's center-line to TV cable mount distance.
Right now I've pulled the transmission out and put the C6 back in. I was going to send the transmission back but was talking with a transmission shop on Friday and he thinks by the sounds of what is happening is a stuck governor so I'm loading it up in the trunk of my car tomorrow and will let him look at it on Tuesday. Unfortunately he is 300 miles away..
My friend has a 54 Ford sedan with a 351W and AOD he installed with an Edelbrock carb and Lokar cable.. When I first drove it the transmission wanted to sift way too early. I looked various AOD adjustment instructions (including the Lokar instructions) and we tried to follow them. We could either get the idle with no shim or the idle with shim adjustment correct but not both. Since the idle with shim also got the pressure about right running down the road we left it that way. The car drives nicely now and the transmission "feels" like it is operating properly.
Problem I've been having with this transmission is it hangs up in second gear and won't go in first unless you shift it manually..I had the pressures set and seemed to be working fine ..
