Finally finished up the beer keg tool box. It is screwed to the wooden stand from inside the keg and then the stand is lag bolted through the bed strip holes from under the truck. I cut up an old serpentine belt and glued it to the bottom of the stand to protect the bed. I'll move onto the gas can as I get some more time in the garage. The foam pad is two anti-fatigue mats from Harbor Freight. Horizontal spaces have their own gravity and the truck bed gets used as temp. storage once in a while. The foam protects the bed but comes out when I hit the road.
That looks good ZSK. But is bolting it to the wood strips going to be secure enough if you hit something? It wouldn't be good to have it hit you in the back of the head. My recommendation would be to install a metal crossmember that at least anchors to both bed sides under the wood. Sorry, just my 2 cents.
He's using the bolts that hold the bed strips down. I did similar on my bed box, no problems, although I caught 4 bolts and two of them are into the crossmember.

Yes, just anchoring into the wood doesn't seem safe to me. Particularly when the mount has some give due to the protective pad.
Thanks for the concern. Just like ALBUQ F-1, four bolts into the stand that replaced the carriage bolts holding the bed strips. Front two are through the bed cross member, rear two bolts are through the holes in the bed strip with large fender washers straddling the bed boards. It's mounted quite secure.

That sounds good. Sorry for the critique but I just wanted to be clear as often others want to do something similar and they use our posts sometimes years later. Looks good.
I appreciate and admire the suggestions for a bed box. I went out and purchased the lumber, hinges, etc. to make one and to improve my woodworking skills.
I concluded it was a little too much work for me to commit to at this time so I purchased an aluminum one for $58. Like Ross, I bolted it to the floor using existing floor bolts. I used a rubber fatigue pad underneath to prevent marring of the SS strips. I used spray adhesive to line the inside walls with carpet to prevent dinging of the box. I also riveted a Winchester sign to add a Western flair.
I can now store most tool essentials in case of a minor road repair. It sure beats storing the stuff under the bench seat.
That looks nice! I intended to take mine out after trips, but it's so useful I never have. I keep a foldable chair in it, tools, jack, fluids, stuff that would never fit in the cab.
