I am interested in ideas for a tool/storage box for the bed to carry emergency tools and miscellaneous supplies while traveling. I’m concerned about the box sliding and would also like to know how you mounted the box to prevent bed damage. Thanks.
I have a really big box, to carry luggage, tools, and everything needed for long trips. I didn't want to drill new holes in the bed so I used the bolts on the bed strips to anchor the box. (longer bolts) I put rubber pads between the box and the strips. It can be removed pretty quickly, but it's so useful I never have.
I am planning on using this . I will narrow it and lower it to fit , make approximately 2/3 of the left side of the top opening and leave the brass filler area for the battery plus use the filler for my fuel tank which is a plastic running board type and will be moved to the passenger side . At least that's my plan .
Those are some really big boxes, great for long road trips. However, I believe the mounting concept would be the same regardless of box size.
Ross, I like how you mounted your box. I’ll assume you drilled holes in the box and that you did not need to use carriage bolts since the box is raised above the strips. However, removal of the box may require getting under the bed to hold the nut while loosening the bolt. But as you said, there may be no need to do so since the box is quite useful.
My IH has a steel floor and I put nut-serts in the floor, then the toolbox bolts in place. Very easy to remove if I have to since I won't need to crawl underneath the truck.
I took this toolbox that was sitting in the scrap pile (lots of cracks I had to fix) and chopped it up to fit exactly how I wanted it.
I used carriage bolts so they wouldn't spin while tightening the nut underneath. Very easy to file the holes square in the aluminum box.
A lot of the BiltRite boxes are an inch narrower than our beds, I had considered bolting in from the sides (my bedsides have at least 20 holes already, Thanks PO!).
My truck came with a tool box bolted to the top of the bed sides. I wouldn't do it that way but it worked. I've removed the box and if anyone wants they can have it.
Good topic! I was looking at collapsible truck/bed organizers on amazon/ ebay. I was interested in one that I could put some cleaning supplies and basic tools (and wouldn't slide all over the place). Haven't purchased one yet so I'm interested in seeing what other people use.
I like the vintage cooler/ wood box idea, but I didn't want something as permanent.
That one is cool!
I recently saw one that had a leather strap dome top trunk that looked great. Another used an old police riot gear box to cover the top of a fuel cell. I like the idea of an old beer/whiskey crate, but I'd want a way to prevent it from sliding and also not drilling holes.
To secure it i cut 2 extra trex pieces that fit the bottom of the trunk and bolted them to the bed. I thought i'd have to screw the trunk down to attach it properly but in many miles of bouncing the trunk has never come loose. (And, with the stock suspension, it's plenty bouncy!) So now it's also easily removable if I do need the whole bed for anything.
