Transmission issue has me stumped, need some pointers PLEASE!!
I recently bought a 76 F250 w/390 from a guy who hadn't ran it since 1991; after putting the work into it, I finally got her running strong and I thought I might have finally reached the end of my troubles. I was wrong, apparently, because now the transmission seems to be acting up. It will shudder for a moment then go into Neutral, and it won't move again without turning it off and back on. Now it's not even doing that anymore even after replacing the transmission filter AGAIN, and replacing the modulator whatchamacallit. I'm at a loss since when I drain the fluid, there's no shavings or anything and there had never been an issue before now. Can anyone help me with this? Or do I have to break it down and go find another transmission? Thanks ya'll for your time and help
Well, time for a pressure check, with valve body out pressure the ports with shop air, listen. If air leaks are heard, it is bad. It sounds like a converter to me maybe. When running, loosen a cooler line, see if fluid is pumping. Next would be linkage adjustment, If 4x4 is transfer case in gear and not slipping? If 2wd is rear drive shaft trying to rotate? might be a broken axleshaft, might be a broken spider gear/carrier. The last thing I would consider before dismantling anything is a broken flexplate. Does the starter do anything funny? with engine running and inspection cover open, does the flexplate and torque converter both turn?
I would rebuild what you got. Even if you find a used one that worked who knows how long before your right back to where you started from. Either way don't forget to clean out the lines and the cooler. You don't want anything from that old trans pumped back into your new trans.
