Ok... Here's the situation. My motor blew before Xmas. Had it rebuilt. When motor was out, changed fluid and filter even drained converter. After some minor but time consuming setbacks, got er back together. Took it on maiden voyage last night, ran like crap, but drove fine. Rebuilt carb today, went to go for another test drive.... Wouldn't move. Checked a few things and put some more fluid in it and still nothing. Revved it up and it barely moved almost like being neutral dropped. Sort of. Guys have any input or advice? I've been without er too long. And it's Nickle diming me to death and being a PITA!
If you had the converter out to drain there is a good possibility that the converter wasn't all the way into the pump when it was bolted back together. Unfortunately if this is the case, as soon as you started the engine pump damage may have occurred.
Remove a cooler line and start the engine, if there is no oil flow you will have to remove the trans and repair damage to the pump and converter and clean out the metal contamination in the trans.
Thats good, I still would do the cooler line test just to see, or check the fluid level with the engine off and again with the engine running, the fluid level should drop with engine running.
Could filter be blocked? No exageration. I took that pan off like 5 times cuz it was leaking. Ended up getting nother pan. But why would it drive ok, park it then it be messed up?
If the filter is blocked it is because the trans has come apart. A failed trans can block the filter, but the filter can't get blocked until the trans fails.
If it were the filter the first gear you would lose would be reverse, not drive.
Idk. Put in reverse initially. Then noticed prob. Messed with 4x4 to make sure location. Then it was blocking driveway. So got mad after everything else and put in drive. Just worried after 5 pan probs/changes something possibly blocked filter. Just can't see after driving 15 miles with motor running like crap but driving fine, having this prob. Not denying anyone's expertise, just don't understand. And VERY frustrated at this point.
Which one is supply and return. And if tranny is bad, would now be a good time to change to a 4spd auto it's in a 79. Is that a difficult thing to do or is just a simple swap
The four speed is longer, so you'll need to shorten one driveshaft and lengthen the other. The trans crossmember will have to move, too. And you'll need a wiring harness, computer, and several sensors that are not on your '79. Some people would say this is not simple, and some would say it is simple. I don't know where you stand on that.
Definatly not easy. Not even going there. Somehow it was low on fluid. I guess between leaks and pan changes.... It leaked out more fluid than I thought. Or either converter or radiator held more than I thought. Drained pan today and only two qrts came out. That was after putting 3 gallons in. Anyways it moves now. Now just gotta get timing right. Thx for all the help
