Ordered a new cap and rotor from Mac's/Eckler's. The cap fit fine. The rotor is not seating all the way down on the distributor shaft. I compared the old and new rotor. Looks like the raised area inside of the rotor that engages the notch on the shaft is longer than on the old one. I sent an email to the company. Hopefully it was just a manufacturing defect or a mislabeled part.

Back in post #8 I gave you the part number for a Ford rotor. Call your local Ford Dealer and see if they have it in stock. Or buy an aftermarket one (did I, Jeff, actually say that????) at a local big box Parts store.
Thanks I'll take a ride later today and see if they have it in stock.
Come to think of it, you might do a close inspection of that Dizzy. As old and crusty as it looks I'd bet it's original. Grab the top of the shaft and see if it moves around. Like worn out bushings. And suck on a piece of hose connected to the vacuum advance. See if it's rubber diaphragm is good or ruptured. The reason I say this is because if you need a replacement Dizzy, some come with a cap and rotor. The one I bought 4 years ago or so for the 460 now residing in my Bump did. It came with both old school style like yours and ALSO the 77 and up 2 piece cap style. Billet aluminum body. The brand was Rich porter technology. but he must have been bought out. On my box it says www.richporter.com. Now if you click on that you get redirected. But they still show servicing the Dizzy the way I got mine.
I do have some movement in the shaft. Is that the gear on the bottom? I also tested the vacuum advance with a mity vac pump and the advance works ok. I brought both of the rotors down to the auto parts store. I found a real auto parts store near me that actually has parts guys working there not the chain store retail dudes that don't know what a distributor is. Anyways they checked on the computer and they have the rotor. They had one on the shelf but it was sold to a guy who was coming in to pick it up for his 67 289 Mustang. They ordered one for me and it should be in today. It appears that the rotor that I received is the wrong one.

If you are spinning the shaft a bit with your fingers that is the mechanical advance of the Dizzy you are feeling. I meant push/pull to see if the shaft moves in worn out bushings.
Yes the shaft is spinning slightly I'll try to pull up/down and see if there is movement. I got the rotor at the local auto parts store. Matched the old one perfectly.
