302 distributor

I'm trying to replace the distributor on my wife's 1984 Lincoln Town Car with a 302 engine. I received the rebuilt dist from Advance Auto, same part number, and am having a problem.

The rotor on the original distributor is held on with two small screws. These screws go into what looks like a flange made up of two parts. These parts sit on top of a bell like device which has little windows cut out. Problem is the flange like part appears to be rivited to the bell like part. Is it normal to have to drill or grind to get them apart.

I need the two part flange off the old dist so I can affix the rotor to the rebuilt distributor but I don't know how to remove it. The rebuilt dist has all the necessary parts except the two part flange for the rotor to attach to.

I don't think I have the wrong distributor because the part numbers are the same.

Try the guys and dolls @ www.linclonsonline.com. Real pros and very helpful. I just did the tuneup on my son's 85 conti and would swear that the rotor just pulled off. They wil know for sure.

They sold you the wrong Distributor and no you do not drill or grind.
The Distributor they sold you is called a Universal Distributor and the one you want is a old style TFI Distributor and was used through 1988 or so as it is in the 1988 Ford Truck Shop Manual. Take it back and go to another parts store. NAPA is a good one if that is not where you got this one.

The one they sold you may work but you will have to replace the Cap, Rotor and the Adapter.

302 distributor

Thanks for the info. The more I looked at this the more I thought it just wasn't the right unit.

302 distributor

I was able to go back to Advance and get a different rotor that worked with the rebuilt distributor which I had purchased before.

What happens is when your core distributor goes back to the supplier they drill out the original flange piece I described above and rebuild the core dist without putting the original flange back on. Hence you have to buy the replacement rotor. Looks like the rebuild people would include the needed rotor with the rebuilt distributor but they don't.
