I have a 2002 7.3 Excursion with 165k on it.
Have the following brown jelly like stuff in my degas bottle. Here are some pics:
Radiator and water pump was done at 90k. Flushed it with distilled and did Red ECL from International dealer. I did the oil cooler seals last July (2016) after seeing some of this and flushed with water and flushed/filled with distilled water. It is again all over my degas bottle (which was new when I did the oil cooler seal). I did not use a detergent when I flushed in July - could it be that there is still stuff all through my system? I assumed it was oil. Was I wrong with my oil cooler seals assumption? (Figured it did not hurt to do them anyway as they seem to go eventually).
I do have a coolant filter system and I did cut the filter open last july and it was not all sludged up. I guess I could put a new one on and check the current one.
Anyone with advice?
That may be a bad oil cooler. If you pressure test the cooling system, that may send coolant to the oil. I'd do this test with the oil out and the drain and filter off - so any coolant coming back will drop out the bottom and not into your oil.

True about sending coolant into the oil. Figures, as I did an oil change last night....
Is it common for the cooler itself to go bad? When I took it apart it "looked" ok and the holes were clear. I put new seals on and put it back together.
Since you did the oil cooler seals already it my very well be residual oil. Before I waste an oil change and pressure test it I would drain the coolant flush several times with hose water, then add some Cascade dishwasher liquid and run it around for a while to get it hot then flush with 20 to 30 gallon of distilled water.
I am debating a new radiator also as a precaution. As for doing the liquid Cascade dishwasher detergent flush, how much are you supposed to use? Thanks to Costco, I have like 3 big bottles of that stuff on the shelf!
I'm not sure how much you're "supposed" to use but I used about a 5 or 6 second squeeze of the bottle in to the degas tank. Too much?? Maybe.. OCD always leads me in the right direction lmao. But it worked very well.

I did my oil cooler preemptively so I never had oil in my coolant. My radiator was leaking so with that I went ahead and did water pump and oil cooler while I had it drained. Cascade will continue to clean after all the flushing because you can't get it all out. After a while I was seeing flakes and chunks of crap in the degas tank, but a filter from RRD took care of that.
