hmmm... not the answer i was hoping for.

since the new shift linkage is machined on both ends, it can only go in one way, right? the 'slot' appears to be cut at 180˚, so even if i pulled it and rotated it, it would still be in the same position relative to the MLPS.

seems to shift thru all 6 detents just fine.

any theories??

Do you have your detent spring tight? if its loose it can change the orientation of the selector shaft. It looks like its tight from your picture I am just tring to think of reasons why it might be off.

When the line is correct on the switch can the bolts be installed at all? even if they are not in the center of the holes?

well i didn't mess with the detent spring (tightening or loosening), though it was a bit of a hassle getting it all back together, as the detent lever kept trying to slip off (if that makes sense). eventually it just seemed to slip together correctly and stay put before buttoning everything up.

no, bolt holes do not quite line up w/o clocking the assembly slightly CCW. i guess i'll try wallowing the holes just a bit, as i really don't want to pull this transmission out again unless i absolutely have to (kind of a pain working solo), especially with new gasket just installed.

Thumbs down d@mn

hmmm...

finally got everything put together (motor/tranny/exhaust/shifter), but something isn't quite right. don't seem to have neutral. will start in park, but when i go thru the gears (no driveshaft) tailshaft goes from one direction spinning to the other direction. first i thought maybe shift cable was wrong, but after disconnecting same issue.

feeling a bit distressed about this setback after the thrill of firing up motor for first time... esp. if i have to yank this tranny out, drain $100 / 17 qts of tranny fluid to reinstall the linkage shaft internally.

any other ideas?

It is possible for the shaft to spin in neutral just do to the drag of the clutch plates even when they are not engaged, transmissions can even turn the wheels in neutral when the car is on the lift. Transmissions dont just loose neutral without effecting forward or reverse as well, I dont think what you are seeing is anything to worry about at this time.

I would install the drive shaft and set the vehicle on the ground and see if you dont have a different result.

James, thanks a million... you've at least given me a glimmer of hope! I have to have a driveshaft made first, but at least for now I'll try to think optimistically until I can test your theory (fingers crossed).

I appreciate your professional insight.
