I had a step bumper on my '72, which I removed yesterday. I want to replace it with a "regular" bumper. Are the brackets the same for either? I intend to sell the step bumper, and I'll let the brackets go with it, IF I don't need them for the new bumper.
I'm not sure on that particular style of rear bumper how it's mounted but, in the case of the more common dealer style step bumper, the brackets are made into the bumper itself.
In the case of the optional contour rear bumper, the (4) bolt-on bracket pieces are separate from the bumper.
Those brackets for the "regular" bumper used to be gold. I cabbaged every set I could find and always got at least $150 plus shipping on ebay (10-15 years ago). I've seen them bring more. Maybe somebody repops them now. The bumper from the 73 and up and the 78-79 Bronco is the same IIRC, but the brackets are not but you might use them if you want to put big spacers between the bracket and frame so the holes line up through the bumper.
DC has a set of rear bumper brackets for 1964-72 Styleside. However, they don't look anything like what I expected. I expected that perhaps my outer brackets would work for either style bumper, but surely those inner brackets on the step bumper would be unique. I've uploaded a bunch of pics in my album, "Bumper," if you want to see.

This appears to be a genuine Ford painted argent step bumper (matches the parts catalog pic, chrome was also available).
It has 4 mounting brackets. These are not the same as the contour rear bumper brackets!

Bill, I wondered if it is OEM. I searched that thing over for a stamped part number, but to no avail. I realize it could be filled up with paint, and my peepers ain't quite as good as they used to be. Any idea if the number was stamped on these? And where?

There's no part number on a step or contour rear bumper, unless they were replaced at some point.
Then will either have a stenciled part number, or a paper tag with the part number glued to the bumper.
Parts catalog pic of step bumper matches yours, has one bolt head visible per side (for the outer brackets) and one license lamp per side.
Your bumper has had the left license plate lamp replaced by a trailer lamp plug.
Aftermarket step bumpers had the right & left brackets made as part of the bumper.
Carpenter, and others, sell brackets for the contour bumper. DC gets $120 for a set. Obsolete Ford parts is $140. NPD is $107. I just installed the DC set. Had to elongate holes in the main brackets, and trim them about 3/8" so the bumper would fit up against them, and the bolt holes would line up.
