Hey guys, I got a 78 f-100 with a inline six and three speed column shifter, but I am going to change over to a floor shifter. I got a shifter kit from Autozone, not anything fancy, price was the biggest issue because I am in college. Anyway, I am wondering if any of you guys have experience changing over to a floor shifter? If you have, what problems might I run in to and what should I be ready for? Any advice is more than welcome. Thanks.
I've done this conversion on my 78' 2wd supercab. I bought a hurst three speed indy shifter from summit, should be about the same as your kit. It was very easy to do, it probably took me an hour and a half?? The hardest part would have to be getting the linkage adjusted perfect. If you need pictures and a step by step email me.
Good luck!
I have a '79 f-100 that was on the tree but then dropped to the floor. It has a hurst shifter in it. I couldn't tell you how hard it was to do because I bought the truck off my friend who had put all his time and energy into it. It looks wonderful he did a great job. The only thing i'm a little worried about is the custom linkage sticks a little but it might need a little ajusting. Good luck you'll be happy with it.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has done Except mine was done the hard way my floor shifter is a manual?! unit ie it bolts on the column shift links. It's a misson getting in there to fasten bolts etc. It works a sight better than my column shift did though.
Would any of you guys perhaps have the specs for the 3 speed manual box as found in 74 F100. Ratio's etc I can't find much on these.
Well then my friend did it the hard way too, mine's a 3 speed manual as well. nice to see there's two of us. All that matters is that your happy with it.
I got my shifter on! By the way, mine is a manual transmission too. So far it is working pretty good. I still have to do a little fine tuning with it, but I drove it around quite a bit yesterday and everything held together. I am pleased with it so far. The shifts are a lot shorter and easier than with the column shifter, which is exactly what I was looking for. It is a universal kit. I couldn't find anything specific for my truck. I didn't even know you could get kits for my specific truck. All I could find were universal kits. Anyway, I will let you guys know if it holds together and if my craftmanship is adequate. Thank for all the help.
