I'm getting a sound every now and then of what sounds like i'm running over rumble strips on the side of the highway. I'm guessing it's the trans grinding. Any thoughts?
You will have to go through the process of elimination,inspect shake rattle spin test,front wheel bearings,brakes,drive line spline yoke & ujoints & carrier bearing,rear axle ,transmission tail shaft,[transfercase if its a 4x4 ] may need to put it up on jack stands & test the running gear, But be careful You dont get tangled up in moving parts,note sometimes you have to drop drive line to test u joints.

I think it's the trans because it seems to be happening when it upshifts and it stops when i let off the gas.

Check your hub bearings, I had same symptoms, hit a bump and sounds like rumble strips. Slow down or stop and goes away until you hit another bump.
