Hey all, I own a 96 f-350 psd, with the 7.3l 4x4. And E40D auto trans. I blew out drive shaft on freeway and cracked the trans extension tial plate, it basically connects the trans to the transfer case. When i went in to replace it i notced that the trans end shaft had some play in it. I dont know if this is normal, And when i let off the gas pedel the truck has a slopy feel to it, like it will thud. I dont know if anyone can help me with this. BTW the truck has 210,000 with a rebuilt trans with shift kit, i bought the truck with it in already. Thanks.
Between the trans, transfer case, drive line, axle and with 210,000 there is likely a bit of play in each. Added up all the small bits of play end up being quite a bit.
Check u joints but I'll bet if you jack up the rear and move a tire, most of the play will be in the ring/pinion. It can be fixed but if you don't have the know how plus the tools, I'd take it to a good shop. If the play isn't too bad, I'd just drive it. I've seen trucks go many thousands of miles with some slop in ring/pinion. Just keep aware that the problem is there a drive accordingly.
OK! thanks. ill check that. I put in new u joints when the shaft blew out so there good. but ill jack it up and check. how mutch for a rebuild on the rear do you think?
