chips and ca smog

Howdy all,

I have a problem. When I bought my 99 f250 7.3 it had a Banks Ottomind chip. I didn't know this, nor did the smog guys notice, so it has passed for years. This time around they noticed. By this time I knew it was there but didn't know it would cause a problem. Anyway, I looked into it, and you can get one of the "this is legal" stickers for this chip, but it takes times and I need to be smogged. So I took the chip off, drove it around for a few days to allow all the tests to run, and took it back. Now the smog guys can't run the test. Their scan tool won't do its part of the test. The OBDII fuses are good, and I can still see things with TorquePro.

Has anyone else had this problem? Maybe the computer needs to be re-flashed (I've heard people talking about that in conjunction with chips)? Or failing that, does anyone have advice about what to do next?

Thanks!

Go to the DMV and get a temporary moving permit while you wait for the sticker. Thats honestly your best option at this point. Its a little odd that their system won't talk to it. Will it talk to it with the chip installed?

Well, it used to smog just fine with the chip in. I might have messed something up when I removed the chip I suppose, but it runs fine. I might have to go the DMV route (shudder).

Is it throwing a p1000 code? If so, the truck needs to go through all the proper drive cycles to clear it.

Where, in Ca, are you located that they are "plugging in" to your truck? In my neck of the woods, NE Cal., smog is a visual only check to verify everything is stock and/or CARB legal.

Sorry I stalled out on answering ... I got it fixed and then life took over for a while. But I should finish the thread out for anyone else with this problem. It was a P1000 problem, possibly complicated by a second code. The local diesel guys found 2 codes, the P1000 and another which I wrote down but can't find (possibly it was a P0666). In any event, it got triggered because I pulled the ECM off to remove the ottomind chip, so the truck thought the battery was dead. The diesel guys seemed to indicate that until the P0666 (or whatever it was) was cleared, the P1000 wouldn't clear. I don't know if that is correct; in any event, they cleared the second code.

I didn't get the P1000 to clear until I got the paper (thanks to djed for sending me the instructions) and went through the rigmarole. Just driving around for 50 miles wasn't sufficient, and after looking at the instructions, it seems unlikely that normal around town or even normal highway driving would be likely to clear the code until a lot of time has passed (one part of the test requires you to go from 35-65 in around 15 seconds in 3rd gear ... not something that usually happens when I'm tooling around).

Thanks for all the help!

I live in the Bay Area. They plug it in to check for codes and do a visual. I don't really have a problem with it, the process helped me uncover a few things that would have otherwise shortened the life of the truck.

Thanks for following-up. It helps everyone else going forward in some way. Glad your problems have been solved.

Just had my truck smog checked and that is exactly what they did. I forgot about checking code from the OBDll port. But that is all he did with the scan. The rest was purely a visual. He did tell me that the current regs. require that I have the sticker(s) visible/available for my AFE filter and intake manafold. A new requirement, but I had them just the same. I questioned him about some folks having to do the SNAP test and he said that there is no such requirement, at least not here.

Karlow,
Don't really know the answer to that. It s just what he told me. That it was a new requirement, although if something is CARB approved all they need to do is look it up. But that requires an extra effort for their $69.00 visual check!
