pulling my 24' travel trailer today with my late 99 f350 superchip on performance tow 4" exhaust 6637 filter. cel light came on . no code when I checked it and light went off when I restarted it. when I got home I finally got around to uninstalling the superchip flash pac and installed a bullydog gt. it seemed to work ok at first but pulling the trailer into town to dump the tanks but started blowing alot of coal. I went for a pull up a big long hill on the highway and was letting off in tow mod to control egts. a hill I could pull in performance pulling the same trailer 20 mgh fast with the superchip. then tripped the cel, boost dropped to 10 lbs and egts went crazy. now I can hit 1300 in tow on a hill when boost suddenly drops from 20 to 10 not pulling the trailer. in stock mod I still role a crazy amount of coal like its on a performance tune. I briefly put if in extreme and back to stock and it stopped all the black smoke like it was stuck in a tune before . I get codes p0238 p1241 p1211 p0603 p1139.. I even pulled a 0238 in stock mode when it was overfueling.... is it the bullydog or is it a problem that is showing up because of the bully dog. Thanks for any help.
get rid of both of then and get a chip or program with custom tunes from a real tuner like DP, Wildman, PHP, Beans, Gearhead or the like.
superchip, edge, and bullydog are generic one tune fits all type things.
Rule #1 when troubleshooting is get everything back to stock tuning. If it's a chip, yank it. Once you are back to stock, start listing the problems you find when the truck tries to do what it was engineered to do.
Not to deny tjc transport's input, but just to clarify the dictionary on this: The tuning community sells their own versions of generic tunes they have written for stock vehicles. It's not until you've customized your truck that it warrants "customized" tuning.
That being said, the mass-produced stuff like Superchips and Bullydog have more effort put into marketing and product styling than they ever put into tuning R&D. They just slap some numbers around in the tune, wrap it in a pretty box, and ask for your money. Many of the enthusiast chip tuners drive their own tunes, so they have more skin in the game. Get lots of input before zeroing in on a new chip... if that's the way you ultimately go.
ill uninstall the tuner afterwork. Just thought I would give it a try. being able to switch tunes sounded great. I got the truck to go back to stock on the bullydog after bumping up to the extreme setting for a couple seconds. now it runs like a stock truck. wounder if a pressure regulator or whatever they manipulate to get more fuel was hung up. I tottaly get the custom vs box tune thing but this is as far as im going for mods. its my hunting fishing trailer puller. I just wanted a little more power and the mpg is nice. thanks
There is no improvement in MPG with tuning, but the Lie-O-Meter above sure makes you think so. Tuning is like a refresher course in deception for the overhead meter. Hand calculation is the only way to really know for sure about MPG.
a new map fixed some eratic boost readings and the truck run great in stoc mod on the bullydog and with the bullydog uninstalled. it still has high egts going up a hill on the highway wot in tow mod not pulling anything. I let off at 1300. what is a safe number for egt? I know it depends on where your probe is. im at the end of the exhaust manifold where the instructions said to be. Thanks again for the help
I keep tripping my cel light with with high boost codes. Wounder if its time for a boost fooler? Im having a hard time believing I cant pull a hill in tow mod without huge egts when im not pulling a thing. it woud be useless with a trailer making me think its something with my truck. one thing about the bullydog is the boost readings are out to lunch. it says i made 23 lbs in stock mode with the tuning uninstalled. then it tried torque pro which said on a hard pull stock tune I make 17.6 lbs. is thia how they make power? It fuels for more boost than it has? im about to throw in the towel and go back to the flash pac which works and is a "box tune" but works. this is really hard to believe...hmmm
Yeah... sensor trickery is a common method for tuning on the some of these mass-produced products.
EGT limit is 1250 degrees F for two minutes before heat soak sets in. Anything higher than that shortens the timer. I set my EGT alarms for 1200 degrees - to accommodate sensor inaccuracy.
