Potential Buyer Slightly Scared

I am in the process of looking at a 2009 F250 Crew Cab Long Bed with the 6.4L Cabelas Edition.

I was all excited to go look at this truck tomorrow before I started reading around here.

It seems these motors have quite a lot of problems.

This particular truck appears to be in great shape given its year. Has 101K miles on it. Looks stock as far as I can tell.

I pulled a Carfax on it and it only has 2 services performed on it at a Ford Dealer. I am trying to find someone to pull an Oasis report on the truck and hopefully that shows some more services on the truck.

The truck was registered as a Commercial truck but it doesn't appear to have been used very harshly.

Is this something worth taking a look at? I don't really need a Super Duty but it has always been something I wanted. I just don't want to buy a used truck that's engine will grenade next week.

Is it truly common for these trucks to have issues? Or is this just another case of people who own trucks with problems being the dominant source on the internet?

At this point, there aren't that many of us that come by the 6.4 forum. Percentage wise, it makes sense for the people who have problems to come by. Most people drive newer trucks and have moved on to the newer one ... 6.7. If you read a sample of threads 3-4 years ago, you'll find a different tone to this forum. I know because I was shopping for mine then.

If you don't really need a Super Duty, it might be a bad choice in diesel form. Most diesels don't like being driven for short distances. They much prefer longer trips. Also, if you plan to keep the emission equipment on, count on having some issues. That being said, the 6.7 has some similar issues as well. It's the nature of the DPF.

Is that just because the issues took a few years to pop up?

If I pull the oasis report on this truck and the service record looks perfect, what are the chances that this truck will be reliable? I know it's hard to take predict but are majority of these trucks sold still on the road and mostly trouble free? From what I have seen it seems that it is the opposite and most of these trucks are plagued by problems.

In my last several hours of research I have concluded that I will likely ditch the emissions equipment because it appears to increase reliability.

At my local dealership the folks at the parts counter know me by name due to my previous 6.0L - every weekend it needed something. As soon as the heard that I was buying a 6.4L, they said they would never see me again except for filters - and they are correct, I add fuel, check levels and drive the truck with no concerns. 08 w 135k now.

The best thing you can do is to change the Oil filter every 3000~4000 miles.

^^^What he said.

I have a 2010 with 111k. All I do is follow the "severe duty" maintenance schedule called out in the manual. Oil/filter every 5k and fuel filters every 10k. Most importantly, delete the DPF. EGR delete wouldn't hurt either...because they can still leak potentially causing serious issues as well. I also run oil/fuel additives (Archoil).

Only issue I've had is a drive shaft sensor failure...no big deal...though limping to the dealer sucks.

My 2008 f250 6.4L has been running great since I removed the DPF/CAT 1 1/2 years ago and tuned it. Get rid of that stuff unless your state requires it. I put up with frequent regens, getting smoked out, and degas levels fluctuating all the time. No issues since. Doing oil changes and fuel filter changes on severe schedules, draining WFM regularly, and other maintenance.

The issues are real and should not be ignored.

some folks on this forum report no problems.

if you are going to buy a 6.4, I would recommend one with a lot less miles on it that 100K.

^^^I agree. There are still plenty of lower mileage 6.4 trucks out there. Just depends on how far you want to go to get one.

I got into mine at 72k. However, I purchased it from the original dealer who sold the truck new originally. The director of parts and service went through the entire vehicle service history with me. It had no issues...so I went for it...did the deletes/mods...major trouble free so far.
