I don't know why this is even being debated. Pre-Fill, period.
-It costs nothing to do
-It takes no more time to do (what's the difference if you pour the quart into the valve cover, or into the oil filter?)
-It pre-soaks the paper element inside for less chance of ripping causing some unfiltered oil to get by
-It ensures full oil pressure at start-up
-Ford denies warranty for using the incorrect oil filter without an anti-drainback valve causing dry starts until the oil fills the oil filter and then oil pressure builds.....so they will certainly deny warranty for not filling the oil filter during an oil change. They'll pull the ECU data and prove it to you that you ran it without oil, even if it was only a few seconds. It's all recorded, they're not dumb.
Its fine either way. I like the idea of prefilling better. Just FYI, prefilling does not ensure full oil pressure at startup. It still takes a second, because you cannot totally fill the filter, and oil is not held in the sprayers for the valve rockers. Your allegation regarding Ford voiding warranty for oil filters that aren't prefilled is completely absurd and not true.
I have to agree with the guy, what's absurd is not putting a little bit of oil in the filter when it sits straight up and down. Takes no time, definitely isn't any harder on your truck getting oil flow a couple seconds earlier, and why would they have an anti drain valve on the filter if it wasn't important to keep it full. Is your truck going to blow up if you don't, probably not but it definitely doesn't hurt and takes no time to put some oil in the filter while you let the pan finish draining.
Nothing like a good old oil thread. I change my oil about every month and a half and prefilling is a step I would never do. There is zero data that says it harms your engine to not pre fill, ford doesn't even recommend it. Your engine is prelubed, there is oil in rings and bearings. 2 seconds will not hurt anything. Would like to know gpm of oil pump at idle.
I have always prefilled my filters on my 7.3 and will continue to do so on my 6.7. It does hurt to do it, a little self insurance imo. and doesn't take a lot of extra time.
