I never try to pour the oil through the small holes...just straight down the threaded hole...let it settle and soak in...top some more...repeat.

The oil is brand new from a sealed container. Does not need to be filtered.

Agree 100%, that is exactly how I fill the filter.

I was just responding to this post...

Pretty sure that was just an obscure joke. He doesn't really do that, nor seriously suggest that.

I can't remember if there is a check valve on the 6.7 filter or not. I think there is, and yes that negates trying to fill it from the outside holes. We use all non check valve filters at work, and yes we fill them from the outside holes. It takes an extra few minutes but not a big deal. Granted all that oil comes from bulk tanks.

For those saying you dump it down the valvecover so why does it matter.........it just runs down to the pan and the first place it goes on startup is the filter.

Take it or leave it. Not 6.7 applicable, but would you fill a spin on fuel filter through the center hole? If you do/would you're nuts with todays engines.

Waste of time, Put the filter on and fill the crank case with oil, With out starting your engine, Try removing your filter. It will have oil in it.

Or reverse the order, Try removing your oil filter first before you pull your oil pan drain plug, see h ow much oil drains out the filter hole after the filter is removed.

I guess I stand corrected!

Either way... Fill or not to Fill. I always have. Hate the "Wait" for the pressure to build while the filter fills.

Same here. Have pre-filled the filter since... well forever. I just do it while the engine drains, filter sits in it's box so it doesn't roll over while I do it. On the 6.7 I can fill it to the top as it sits vertical, on angled filters I just do one fill and let it soak in.

The point is that the oil coming out of the sealed container is going to be cleaner and more pure than it will ever be once in the engine...so no filtering of *that* particular oil is needed.

Never have. Changed oil on all 9 of my superduty's since 2000(over 750k of miles), also my '97 that I still have with 240k on. I've read people doing this on these boards all the way back to the late '90's but never have done it. Seemed overkill. Haven't lost a turbo bearing yet.

But with that dual filter setup on my 96 and my wife's 09 Escape, I still prefilled the filters.

You guys are funny...

oil change 101: PRE-FILL the filter!! Heck I always thought everyone filled the filter before installing it. even engines that the filter went in at a funky angle I still prefill, if you spin fast enough the oil wont come out.
