1978 F150 4.9 Uremco carb #77523
The mechanic says my choke is dead.
i understand a manual choke is an option.
Is there a straight-out replacement for quick and easy repair?
Thank you Tommy
Simple answer is yes. Dorman makes a universal choke conversion kit. I had one on a holley and thought it was crap. Depending on what is wrong with your current choke, you can get replacement parts to fix it. Sounds like your carb is a factory replacement and simple looking up your specific vehicle will get you the parts available.
I went with an electric choke conversion kit I bought from a guy online. (Apparently linking to vendors who don't sponsor the site is illegal, so I'll leave it a mystery to go figure out who sells the conversion kit.) It was like $35 and my choke actually works the way it's supposed to.
I had to remove an intake bolt to install the heat sensor, and I had to find a source of switched 12V power. It took me about an afternoon of piddling around, but in the end I can actually start the truck and let it fast idle until it warms up, then drive away when it idles down. Wow! Honestly, I never had an automatic choke working this well back in the day. $35 well spent in my opinion.
