Just got a new to me 2013 6.7 with 110k miles. I'm in the market for a dpf delete/egr blockoff. I want to delete these for the following reasons- increase gas milage, make it a little louder, and not have to worry about regens. A little power (around 30-40 hp) would be nice, but I am not doing this to blow smoke or to unleash a whole new beast. Primarily want to keep it stock.
After researching for what seems like hours, I still have a couple of questions.
1. Given that I am just doing it for the previous reasons, what would be the cheapest but still quality way to go about doing this? I was thinking just a tuner and 4" dpf delete pipe.
2. What tuner should I go with? I have heard mixed reviews on H&S Mini maxx.
3. A buddy of mine said his buddy is able to enter the trucks ECM and tune the truck without having to buy a tuner? He said I would pay his buddy $300 and his buddy would install a single tune on my truck. Is this legit?
4. When people mention buying tunes, is this done when you buy the custom tunes? Or do all tuners require purchasing of tunes?
I have done my research, just couldn't find the answers to some of these. I appreciate the help.
The safest way is to buy a tuner and a delete pipe. You can always add a muffler later if you don't like the noise. If a "buddy's buddy" does the tuning, you will be stuck with that. Might seem simple now, but if you make a change, you most likely will have an issue putting a different tune on later. REALLY not worth saving a few bucks on this option. Don't expect the mileage to change much. Some do, some don't. Really depends on the driving style. All legitimate tuners require payment for the tunes but they also support them if you have issues.

What budget tuners would you recommend/ have experience with? Im essentially just looking for a tuner that will allow the engine to run without the dpf on.
And none of the tuners come with tunes already on them that you can just plug in?
I'm running an XRT with off-road tunes for when I am off-road. Works great for me, everyone has their favorite. Some come with race tunes but custom tunes are much more refined and user friendly.

Last question for ya.
What I essentially want to do is remove the dpf and have the engine run without the dpf in place (no codes or engine going into limp mode) Does this require an additional purchase after buying the tuner? As in does the tuner you buy come with the ability to disable the dpf straight out of the box?
I am also planning to delete and tune this spring.
Tuners - I was looking at the SCT livewire and X4. Once I found out that the livewire could NOT do switch on the fly with custom tunes I took the livewire off my list and will most likely go with the X4.
Tunes - The SCT tuners come with tunes but it is my understanding that you will need custom tunes to delete the DPF without throwing codes. I've heard really good things about Tyrant tunes and have them on my short list.
EGR - I plan to use block off plates. I notice that you did not mention anything about the EGR. I would highly recommend deleting the EGR or using block off plates. My EGR clogged at 51,000 miles and was serviced under warranty. You will for sure clog your EGR running performance tunes.
DPF - From my research there are a couple of Donaldson mufflers that are a direct fit or very close. Right now my plan is to use the one with the higher flow rate and less noise reduction. Based on one of the comments above maybe I'll just get a straight pipe and try it first if the price is right and the labor to switch to a Donaldson is not that bad.
My next question goes out to those that have deleted and performed the work themselves. How difficult is it? Back when I was younger I did all the wrenching on my cars and have a good collection of tools. I could also find a friend to help. I don't have a lift so would be using jack stands if required. Should I attempt this myself or find a shop?
I did mine, was easy with trans jack, the bolts for hanger brackets is a slick setup made it easy. For the muffler, I went one day without and then threw down on Donaldson M085421
