Hi All, I bought a 69 F250 and Im pretty sure the gas tank was completely empty. I put gas in it but for the life of me I cant get gas to the fuel pump. I ordered another fuel pump for it. Ill pick it up in a couple hours. Will a stock pump pick up gas out of the behind the seat tank or do I have to prime the system? Ive blown air into the tank (bubbles) from under the cab and blown air to the pump from the same place. Just gotta get it up to the carb.
A good pump will suck the gas from the tank. If everything is clear and open. And there isn't an ancient rubber hose between the tank and pump that's not quite sealed and allowing the pump to suck air instead of gas. This happened to my rig and a couple others here.
But at cranking RPM it may take longer than the battery and starter would like. Do the ol' little bit of gas down the throat of the carb and start it a couple times. This will help the pump suck gas from the tank faster.
If you have the inner frame tank & behind the seat tank the gas tank selector under driver side seat may be set at the wrong tank is you came get any gas from the line.
Any truck that's been siting replace all rubber lines like Jeff said, that one under the driver side cab can fool you looks good but cracked sucking air or leak gas.

Thanks guys. Ive replace all rubber hose, fuel pump and I still cant get gas to the carb. I tried priming the pump from the carb end of the hose and the truck ran longer than is had but still no gas when I pulled the hose off the carb. Could there be a problem in the tank? Is it possible the pump is not being actuated?
I went out and replaced the small piece under the cab. Ive bypassed the valve down by the seat. Ive been putting fuel in the carb to help. I unhooked the hose at the carb and ran it. I had some gas come out. hooked it back up and it ran for some time. then died. took the hose off the carb again and dry as a bone. ran it again and had gas come out hooked it back up and it just wont stay running.
great idea. Im gonna do that. It ran for a good 15 mins or so. turned it off and came back 30 mins later and its acting the same way....no fuel. Ill have to take it off at the carb and see if Im getting fuel....tomorrow. I gotta say Im very pleased. I got a great deal on this old truck. Not running. carb and wiring issues. both issues just about solved.
If your truck has two fuel tanks (in cab tank & optional auxiliary tank), the manually operated fuel tank selector valve on the floor changes the tanks.
Under the dash mounted to a bracket to the left of the column is a switch that changes the dash fuel gauge from one tank to the other.
The original fuel pump on these trucks has a canister that threads onto the pump. Inside the canister is this:
C4AZ-9365-B .. Corrugated Paper Cartridge Fuel Filter (Motorcraft FG-1A) / Available from Ford & auto parts stores.
Some people are unaware, so they install an in-line fuel filter. Meanwhile the fuel pump filter is getting more clogged up every day.
Thanks Bill. for the mean time ive bypassed the valve under the seat and I installed a new fuel pump. I put more gas in it. Unfortunately I forgot the clear filter...When I take the fuel line off the carb then run it I can get gas to come out of the line. I hook it back up the truck will run for a minute then starves and dies. I disconnect the fuel line again and no gas... Im considering bypassing from tank to fuel pump with hose and see what happens. No more time today though.
