the tach is a super pro tach. The engine more or less pulls about 2/3 of the rpms at 55mph with the 4.10s.

Exchange the Tach. It sounds like you got a defective one. After you install the new one check the readings again. let us know what happens.

I don't know if your tach is working correctly, or wired up correctly, or not. But if you really are only getting 3800 rpms, something is wrong. What valvesprings were installed on that '2 steps larger' cam ? If the valve springs are weak, or if they are the stockers on a big cam, that would cause problems. DF

The problem is your tach, I'm sure of it. I had one of those cheap *** super pro tachs. It always read about 500-600 rpm fast, untill it one day would not read over 2,600 no matter how high I revved the engine. Get the slightly more expensive Sun Pro tach, it is better. Or if you'r not on a budget, Auto guage/ Auto Meter tachs are nice.

I hooked the green tach wire to the green wire into the coil. Which is the negitve wire, I believe.

an igniton coil can be hooked up back ward and the engine will still run, but not like its supposed to.
you want the voltage or hot wire going to the positive side of the coil, some where on the coil top it should have a plus sighn for positive or a sighn that says bat for battery, and the negative side goes to the points or what ever trigger switch your using ( pertronix etc).
most tachometers have 4 wires, red, black, green, and white.
the red wire goes to a 12 volt source thats live when your key is switched on, the black wire goes to ground, the white wire is for the light for the tack ( you can hook this up any old time it doesnt have to be hooked up for the tach to work ) and the green wire goes to the negative side of the coil.
and like mentioned above, you may want to get a new tach if you suspect yours is flaking out or if its possible its been wired wrong.
