1982 300-6 Redline?

I picked up a tach today with an adjustable shift pointer but I cannot find a credible source to know what my redline is. Not that i will max out my dinosaur at every light, just like to know what is the redline rpm for a 1982 F150 2wd with a 300-6 and a C6?

Keeping the 300 I6 under 4000 RPM tends to keep them happy for many years.

With the stock cam, you're really not doing much but making noise past 3600. Sub 4K is where the 300 likes to live.

What I do to set a tach in an automatic is drive the truck to 55mph then floor it and whatever the rpm is before it kicks down is the redline.

Peak HP for a stocker is 3000 rpm, maybe 3200. EFI motors peaked at 3400. So there isn't much reason to go waaay past the hp peak to 4000 or certainly 4500. My '85 didn't care much for anything north of 3000, but would go to 3500. Power fell off pretty good, so no point going higher.

Non-stocker? They probably start wanting to fly apart over 5000.

Anything above 3000 RPM is a waste of gas with the 300 as the power drops off after that.

The useable torque for the engine is between 1500 and 2100 RPM.

I agree with 81-Explorer. My shift point with the 300/6 is between 1700 and 2000 RPM. The only time that it goes any higher than that is going 55mph, about 2300 RPM.

Honestly, as much as my engine sounds like it is screaming at 2000 RPM, I don't see how you guys can go to 3500-4000 RPM without feeling like you're gonna kill it.

With EFI manifolds and a cat-back exhaust my '85 (1V carb'd) gives up the ghost at 3500. As stated, no point in spinning it higher...

Wow... totally different world that what I'm used to. There was a recent thread about running a particular flat-6 under 3,000 being more damaging than higher. A missed shift sent mine over 9K rpm. :-) still getting used to big American steel!

Flat six as in this? Or Boxer 6 cylinder? If the latter, then that is something I can see.

Yes a Boxer-6, as in this. http://www.pictures-of-cars.com/new-...ter-Engine.jpg

Different engines for different purposes. :-)

That Boxer motor has no push rods ... thus not the RPM limit of push rods.

I suspect it'll turn 12k with little work!

-Enjoy
