Transmission...rough shift, not the cable

I have a 1998 Ford F-150 V8 Triton engine 5.4. I have replaced the shift cable with no issues. However it is still shifting rough. I've also tried tightening the two bolts on the steering column and that did not help as well. It's almost like you have to fight to get it into gear but on the road it shifts from gear to gear perfectly. Anybody have any suggestions?. It's an automatic transmission I have no slippage and everything else appears to run perfectly.

It is probably a corroded Transmission Range Sensor (TRS.) That's the sensor on the driver's side of the trans where the shift cable attaches. If they get corroded inside they get really hard to move.

Is the shift lever sloppy?

Disconnect from the transmission end.
Is it still hard to move the shifter?
Disconnect from the lower steering column.
Is it still hard to move?
This has to tell you what part of the control the issue is at.
Good luck.
