Auto shift lever cable broke?

My wifes 95 150 w/E40D 5.8 apparently broke the shift cable between steering column and transmission, or so I am assuming. The lever on column gets no response down at tranny...just moves up and down with no movement to shift connection on tranny. Before I dig into this am I assuming correctly (cable broke) or could there be another problem? Does anyone have schematics and procedures for this project...none of the manuals I own have any info on the shift cable. My wife needs your help so she can go back to feeding the ponies. Thanks.

Try this

I was having a problem with the shifter being very loose and it was getting worse. It never got to the point where the transmission wouldn't shift but it might be the same problem. There is a plate under the dash that holds the cable against the column. The two screws had backed out about 3/8inch. Just that much and I had to start in neutral. Check those screws. Took me two minutes to fix my 96 F-150. It's worth a try. The advise came from 92EBnTX. Worked great.
