Engine Tick - Anyone else?

My brother and I both purchased a 2017 SD PSD. From day 2 his engine has had a nasty mechanical tick that mine doesn't. He starts his truck and even over the noise of both our engines with the trucks parked next to each other I can hear the loud tick...tick tick...tick tick tick. Now 4,000 miles later his engine is still ticking and the dealer claims there's nothing wrong with it, I call BS.

Anyone else have a PSD engine tick?

Fuel quality and whether or not you use pm22a seem to impact clatter.

Try filling at the same station and both add or don't the pm22a and see if the difference stays.

Its not clatter and we both use the same fuel. To me it sounds like what you hear on a gas motor when you have a faulty hydraulic lifter that's not pumping up to take up the lash.

Mine does this too every time I start it cold, but once I start driving, the sound goes away ( about 100 ft.). Its like a lifter clatter that won't pump up with oil. Someone replied to my post and said it is normal, something like pilot injector noise. I'll do a search and try to figure out how to post my original thread in regards. Heres the thread coolidge54, and your in it too.

My brother will be back up to my house in a week or so, I'll have to record a video/audio of this, no way its "normal" imo.

That's a common issue with the 6.7. Google "6.7 Powerstroke Typewriter noise". Its a common issue that will not hurt a thing. I had it with my old 2014 F250. The only way I found to get rid of it was to add an oil additive to the engine oil at every oil change, and that took care of it. At $33.00 a bottle it made an already expensive oil change even more distasteful. The additive is called Motorcraft XL-17. It looks like really dirty motor oil and will stain your fingers black, so be careful.
Again, this noise is totally harmless.
Anyway, I hope this helps guys.

Oh, and I have a question for you. At what mileage did the owner of the problem truck do his first oil change?

Not sure if your referring to me, but my first oil change was done at 1000 miles, rear axle fluid too (by myself). Over kill I know, but its cheap insurance. And I will change oil at every 5k interval.

Yes Jim, I was wondering when you first changed your break in oil, here's why.

Two years ago when my 2014 was new, I went in to change the oil when it had 1500 miles on it to get the break-in oil out of it. My Ford Tech (who is a good Powerstroke Tech), and a friend of mine warned me not to do it. He told me that while in his in-service training at Ford he was told that the break in oil has additives in it that need to be in the engine, and to leave it in there until the computer advises to change it. Well, I listened to him,,, sort of. I came back in at ,3000 miles and told him to change it as I felt it wasn't good for the engine to go that long on break-in oil. He reluctantly did so.
I left the dealership, and within 15 miles, the dreaded 6.7 Typewriter noise started. It would "tick tick tick" from idle up to about (if memory serves me) 1400 rpm, then I couldn't hear it above that rpm.
I was really upset. I did a bunch of research about the issue and learned that my Powerstroke Tech was right, I probably shouldn't have changed the oil so soon. Now, not all 6.7s that have the oil changed early will have this noise, some don't, but those that do are annoying.
The noise does go away after the oil gets about 1500-2000 miles on it, but then when changed again, it comes back.

I know that I'm going to have a bunch of people that will counter what I've said with stories about how they have changed their oil at 1,000 miles and all is well. I agree with those of you, so don't kill the messenger here. Again, not all Scorpions do this, but for those that do have it happen, its a PIA, so count yourself lucky. The only way that I found to stop it was by using Motorcraft XL-17 oil additive/friction modifier. Every time I put the XL-17 in it, I had no typewriter noise. I found one Ford dealership that actually puts a bottle of XL-17 in every 6.7 Scorpion that they service, just to be sure that their customers are happy.

As for my new truck (2017 F350) I've learned my lesson, and it cost me a lot of unnecessary money and hours of my life figuring this out. I'm going to change the oil when the truck tells me to do it and no sooner. It'll be a lot cheaper in the end.

I hope this is helpful for you. Good luck.

I've talked directly to a Ford KTP employee... The ONLY additive in factory fill Powerstroke oil is dye (used to check for leaks on first startup). It is Motorcraft dino 10W30.

As far as ticking, I've heard either your engine will be more prone to ticking, or it won't be. The same KTP employee told me he would "change his oil at 1000 miles and again at 5000 miles if it was his truck." I had my oil changed at 1000 and will go to Synthetic 5W40 at 5000 for towing. No ticking... I guess I got lucky.

FWIW- There is a Tech Service Bulletin from Ford stating it is a normal condition of some Powerstroke Diesels...

I will say this. I don't doubt that my Ford Tech was told this in training. He's a no-nonsense guy who is a man of few words, and when he talks you'd better be listening because he won't say it twice.
Someone else had refuted this info and I spoke to him again about it. He replied, "let the dumb F#@%'s find out for themselves. You did when you didn't listen to me". Point made.
