Noticed this tick while driving my new 2017 home from Georgia to Utah on day 2 since I finally had some decent rest. At first I only heard the tick while moving at low speed with the windows down. Once I got home, I removed the wheel simulators thinking they might be adding to the noise themselves. Took the truck out and drove it slow next to a wall with windows down and now there’s no tick at all? Unbelievable! I’m sure it will be back after reading everyone’s experiences with it here.
I have around 2300 miles on the truck now with the original 10w/30 factory oil in it. 2000 of the miles were all at freeway speed with 5 regens. Now I’m starting to think I should change my oil and filter early and put in 5W/40 CJ-4 full synthetic? I’m probably just getting paranoid?
I had that same typewriter ticking noise in my F350 until about 600 miles. The engine was pretty noisy, but started to quiet down between 500 and 600 miles. I have 4600 miles on it now and just came back from a 2000 mile round trip. I still have the original oil and plan to change it at 5k in a couple of weeks. Hopefully the noise doesn't come back with the oil change. Right it's pretty darn quiet. Not as quiet as a gas engine, but pretty darn quiet.

There are sooo many things in a Diesel that tick that aren't related to the valve train or crankshaft.
How does the wastegate work? Does it 'tick'? Those hi-pressure fuel injectors are pushing fuel into a piston that's already got a gazillion pounds of compression in it.
At auction (at least down here) all Diesels go through at 'Red Light'. Which means, you buys it, you owns it.
Green light is a trouble free auto, yellow light is known problems that they have to make you aware of and Red Light is --
Now...... If it's a solid 'knock' -- A metallic knock....... You need to pay attention. If it's a 'tick'? I dunno. Just keep an eye on it.
As to changing the oil? On a brand new vehicle, I like to get the factory oil out of it within a thousand miles. 2,000 is okay too.
Reason being is that a new motor, green as heck, is tight, tolerances are tight, metal shavings start being made, etc. Breaking-in a new motor is a gut-wrenching, cataclysmic event that puts lots of nasty in your crankcase.
Synthetic in a Diesel? I don't know. Diesels often require more frequent changes and take a lot more oil these days. I remember the good old days when Diesels could go for a lot longer, but today with all the regen crap and raw fuel being dumped into the combustion chamber...... I don't know if it's cost effective.
In a gas motor? I run synthetic all day from the get-go. But, in a gas motor, you can go 10,000 miles if you use a good Group IV oil and they don't hold gallons of oil, just quarts. In a Diesel??? Not so much

New engine build technology has come a long way. The shavings and such you mention? Nope. Tolerances? Precise. Built so that no break in is necessary. It isn't like it used to be. That's for sure.
I have 8200 miles so far. Dealer oil change at 5000 with regular Motorcraft oil. The engine sounds are very quiet and almost sound like a well oiled sewing machine at idle. There are no ticking or other noises. I plan on changing the oil every 5000 miles and fuel filters at 10000 miles.
I love the tick..mine has a small ticking sound...I want it louder, but then again, I had a 7.3, 6.0 and now the 6.7.....bring back having to turn off the engine to order a burger through the drive through.
Mine ticked after the first oil change around 5k miles. Only lasted a month or so and went away. Got 11k on it now and did a 2nd oil change last week, still no ticking, but from what I've been told it's normal and nothing to worry about. (6.7 f250 KR)

Man I used to hate hearing, "Can you turn off your car ?",in my old 7.3's and Cummins'. Whataburger seemed to be the worst for it.
I’ve been waiting to post here for a long time, waiting to see if what i was going to say would remain true. From day one i heard a tick tick tick like a typewriter when i was in a drive through or next to a retaining wall, or even my mailboxes. I read all about it and decided it was not an issue as many have said. Well I only went 700 miles or so before I went the delete route. EGR deleted, and the DPF. I have not heard the tick ever since. Not one trace, I have even tried to get out and listen for it on many occasions. Take this information however you like, I am only stating what I know thus far.
EDIT: the tick was not constant, some days there, some not. (before delete)
My 250 does it as well. Its only in the mornings when I start up. I believe its the dpf heating up and expanding. Once warmed up it goes away. There are a lot of pieces welded together to make that system. Its going to make noise when heating up. You will also hear ticks and pings as it cools. Thats been my experience.
I can relate to the “drive through” senario too. My first Superduty(Ive had 4) was a 1997 F350 DRW single cab XL. Thing sounded like a school bus lol. It was a damn good truck.
New diesel. Approx 400 miles on it and today started this ticking. Before today it was quite. It's alarming since it was so quite and now this. What's the new word on this?
