NEW 7X ENGINE

the 7.0-litre, V8 engine would have more torque and be more fuel efficient than the 6.8-liter V10 engine now built. Due in 2019. How much more TQ?

My guess would be closer to 500 lbft in the 3000-3500 rpm range. The current V10 is at 424 lbft at 3000 rpm. The new motor is supposed to produce better mpg at the same time so I'm not sure how much more aggressive the numbers will get over the existing.

Will be interesting to see the entire lineup of engines once this comes out. 6.2, 7.x, 6.7d and maybe others?
Fun to speculate.

I wanna see a 5.x L V-8 EcoBoost for the Raptor, the 3.5 EB still sounds like a V-6 no matter how they try to tailor the sound.

I very much agree. The new raptor would be a 9 or 10 out of 10 for me but the v6 makes it about a 6 in my eyes. When I first heard it I almost hurled. I want a 5l v8 ecoboost soooo bad. Maybe a version of the rumored 5l ecoboost that may be going in the new gt500.

I'm sure Ford will drop the 6.2 if they come out with a 7.something.

Maybe, maybe not. In the past Ford has had two gas engine options for the F250/f350s In addition to the diesel. 351/460 and 5.4/6.8

I could see Ford wanting to keep the 6.2 for fleet trucks in order to keep the cost down.

I am very curious if it will be an outgrowth of the current 6.2L engine, or a completely new design? It would make more sense to capitalize on the current design; mature, proven and enough room for a bore/stroke job. However, who knows? Maybe a whole new block/head/valve concept?

If they upsize the 6.2L to a 7.x, then they could actually afford to possibly downsize the cubes on the 6.2 to a 6.0 or 5.8? Smaller means better economy. And there are plenty of applications that don't need ball-busting power; contractor foreman trucks, light-product delivery like flowers and food, etc. Then make a monster 7.xL for guys who want more grunt (like me).

They could also pair the smaller engine with the 6R100 and put the 6R140 with the 7L engine.

It's just kind of odd how we become accustomed to power today. Think back to the 1990s or even 2000s and remember the dismal power of the Windsor 5.8L or Lima 460? Today's engines far surpass those with less displacement and better economy. We're spoiled. And that's not a bad thing.

I'd opt for a 7L gasser. I don't need the elephant-like pulling power of 6.7L diesel; I can survive with a rhino-like big inch gasser with far less emissions crap and cheaper maintenance. Sure, it will eat fuel. But in the long term ownership, I'd get over it. Just give me a 45+ gallon tank option so I don't have to stop every 2 hours while pulling my RV.

Lots of folks for a while now have been asking/begging Ford to drop a 5.x Ecoboost into a Super Duty truck. Clearly (IMO anyway), such an engine would be a huge hit sales wise. So, why hasn't Ford offered this option?

One reason would be that it would cannibalize diesel sales and, therefore, severely impact their return on investment for the 6.7. No doubt, Ford has spent millions (billions?) developing this beast. And they most certainly want to recap their investment.

But I think another reason is that Ford knows an Ecoboost wouldn't hold up to the punishment that Super Duty owners would subject it to. A bigger displacement, naturally aspirated engine would be more reliable in the long term.

Just my $.02. Comments/conversation is welcome.

It was said that a boosted v8 for the Super Duty trucks was off the table due to the duty cycle being too severe for the application. Sure, it's 2017 and anything is possible. It was claimed that it wasn't worth the squeeze due to cooling issues. Especially towing the weights they would be expected to yank around.

It's no secret that the 3.5L EcoBoost has been getting quite low fuel economy when fully loaded.
Maybe ford decided that since super duty owners tend to haul a load a much alrger percentage of the time, they didn't want that negative perception of the EcoBoost as a gas hog?

I don't know, we can speculate all we want, but in the end, there are a variety of engines available that seem to meet the needs of the owners. I don't think any additional option would increase overall sales that much, just cannibalize sales from other options, and thus, would not increase profits.
