V10 being replaced?

I hear the V10 is being replaced with the new Boss V8 soon. Does anyone know when exactly, and specs of the new engine? I'm looking at getting a F550 soon, and would really like to get better than the 6 MPG in town my F450 V10 gets now. Lloyd

Putting a V8 in an F-450 or F550 doesn't necessarily mean you will get better mpgs. The 2010 model year is probably when changes will be made.

The 450 and 550 F and E series will probably be the last to see a V8 if at all. They are heavy trucks and need a HD engine like the V10.

I can't imagine that a smaller engine will be more efficient in a larger truck...I could be wrong though.

The problem is the new v8 will still be down on torque compared to the v10. And don't expect any better mileage. The 5.4 is a good example it gets near identical fuel mileage numbers when placed in the heavy super duty chassis.

Could we really go back to a V-8 after gone V-10? Now if Ford wants to make a high horsepower/high torque V-12 to replace our V-10.......well, maybe I'd be okay with that!

I dnt kno about that. I love the reliablity of the v-10. But "if" ford made a v-12, im sure it could be just as reliable.

If they get rid of the V-10 it better be with a V-12 and that "new" engine better be as good as our V-10s.

The "Boss V8" is a Ford of Australia product for cars only, specifically the Ford Falcon. Three flavors are available with the most potent producing 405 HP @ 6000 RPM's and a torque rating of 398 ft-lbs @ 4800 RPM's. Not much of a heavy truck motor but very interesting in a mid-size car......

Rumor was it will be a new 6.2 V8, maybe 10 Ft. LBS less torque, about 40 more horsepower, but it will have direct injection, and possibly cylinder deactivation when idling and low power demand. Supposed to give 20% more mpg. I don't want anther 6 mpg engine, but don't want another Navistar diesel either. I hope the future engines are what everyone speculates, I hear lots of good (efficient) engines are coming. LS

I dont like the idea of cyclinder deactivation on trucks, I would rather get less MPG's.

Gm has been successfully been using cylinder deactivation for several years now. I spend $18,000 a year on fuel, I'm interested in saving it where I can. LS

I don't believe that there will be a big increase in fuel economy without a big reduction of weight of the superduty. Weight is the single largest factor in fuel economy not engine size. We are diving big heavy duty trucks that weight a lot and we pay for it in fuel.

If you want really good fuel economy, by a scooter.

Cylinder deactivation won't due squat on a heavy truck or SUV especially if your using it as its intended, to work.

exactly right on that one DKF! these trucks are made to work, not play around and see what kind of mileage we can get with this or that doodad. get real, if u want mileage, u dont buy a truck period.

Well, some people want to work, some want to play. Some haul bricks, others haul a$$! If the trucks had a low-performance economy mode with the price of gas where it is now and where it seems to be going, I do believe it would be used....
