Starter whirl
I picked up a 85 F350 with ATS 2 weeks ago. It was in bad shape, but it's really coming together now after some love.
Anyway, after replacing injectors, I wanted to check for leaks, so I used to relay on fender to crank. I didn't get a good connection, slipped, sparks, and now I only get a whirling sound when trying to start. No cranking at all.
I know those relays are tough, but I don't want to throw a new starter in if it isn't necessary. I've been told that the little gear that pops out could be stuck in, but I figured I'd come here and ask yall for any ideas.
Im assuming there are alot of starter threads, I did search, but unfortunately search isn't the greatest on a phone.
Thanks for the help. I look foward to reading all the great info on here and bringing this truck back to its glory days.
Don't want to have to do it more than once
while the top bolt is a royal pain to get to, once oy ufigure it out it is a snap.
it sounds to me like the bendix drive in the starter failed.
this is not something oyu did, it was probably bad whne you got the truck and just finally died.
if you have a starter/alternator rebuilding shop in your area, talk to them adn see what they want to rebuild it.
i do not use parts store part because most of the time they got sent to a mas repair facility where they only replace what is bad on an assembly line, paint it, and call it rebuilt. a rebuilder has a reputation to maintain and does it once, the proper way.
i had the starter in my 88 rebuilt around 10 years ago when it had around 300,000 miles on it. the rebuild now has close to 200,000 miles on it and still spins the engine over like new.
Thanks for the advice.
