So I traded my motorcycle for a 99 f250 w/ the 5.4 Triton. The a/c was out so I dropped 900 bucks to have a whole new kit put in. Drove it less than 5 miles to a convenience store and when I came back out all it did was click when I turned the key. Had the mechanic that did the ac come look at it. He said it was either the starter relay or starter but he would be able to find out for sure if I could get it to his shop. I opted to do it my self since I just spent so much. I changed the relay since it's cheaper and it still did the same thing. Had it towed to my house. Changed the starter and it started. Shut it off and started it again just to check. Noticed a sound and smell and realized the starter was still spinning. Shut it off and everything stopped. Tried it again and the starter just spins without turning the engine over. Please help. I'm no mechanic, but have a basic idea how things work and how to change stuff out.
1. Make sure you didn't put the starter cable on the "wrong" post when you replaced the relay.
2. Disconnect the small wire from the relay and see if the starter disengages.
3. If the wiring is correct and the starter still activates with the small wire disconnected, assume either the "new" relay is defective (normally open contacts are welded together internally) or the "new" starter is defective or mis-wired.
